I don’t think Will reads defenses at a high enough level, or has the arm strength to demand certain coverages OSU has grown accustomed to in recent years. Defenses are playing closer to LOS to cheat on the run while being able to defend the deep ball bc it’s just a struggle for him. His touch on deep balls is horrific…combination of lack of arm strength and poor mechanics. Put bluntly, I think Day thought they were getting a higher skilled QB…..and it is what it is…..he’s more mobile than McCord, but his arm strength is woefully short. I think we’re at least a (2) loss team with McCord…I don’t think our season changes drastically bc we have McCord vs Howard…..they’re both substandard to what we’ve seen with Day since he’s been at OSU.

I think the question is…..why such a drop off at QB since Stoud left???

I think the reason why is you’d better be an elite QB if you aren’t going to run them. Justin wasn’t CJ but Justin was such a threat to run that it helped him.

We had two generational arm talents (CJ and Dwayne) and then a generational athlete (Justin). What’s been the special part about Kyle McCord or Howard? Nothing. They’re good QBs but they don’t have those wow qualities.

To be honest I don’t think Sayin does either. We haven’t seen him enough obviously but what I do know is he’s undersized, isn’t overly mobile, and we will have to see if he’s a generational talent throwing the ball. I’d really like to see the incoming kid get a shot. He’s big, he’s mobile, but he’s going to need time learning to throw the ball in the offense.

Which is why I wish they’d step back from the expectations. Stop saying “beat TCUN and then win the rest of the games”. Just say “beat TCUN” and leave it at that.

The goal is to win every game that’s obvious. So we need to just stop obsessing over it because obviously “you play to win the game” so isn’t it silly to publicly affirm you want to win every game?

I like Sayin’s arm and accuracy. But as mentioned above, he isn’t as mobile as one would expect a smallish QB to be. The further from 2019 we get the more one dimensional we become. We can pass but we can’t run. We could have Derrick Henry back there and he’d get stoned. Teams don’t fear our deep threat and know they can load the box and stone us.

Let’s face it….if Day couldn’t beat Michigan at home while running 3 NFL OL plus CJ Stroud and Marvin Harrison , he isn’t going to be elite in any way. I have less faith in our coaching than I’ve had. Call it chicken little or being miserable…..there is a feeling among OL recruits that Ohio State is not the place to be. Great days ahead.

But didn't you hear, The Game is meaningless in this brave new CFP world. I never thought it would be the OSU faithful that decided to quit the Rivalry.

It’s hard to do any of these things when you frequently take 4 downs to get first downs and use up 35 seconds on the play clock. The biggest failure IMO isn’t the targets for JJ or the numbers for the RBs it’s the tempo in which we play.

When you have an offense like this why would you want less snaps? Get to the line and snap the ball. You have the talent advantage on offense so now take a tempo advantage as well which wears down a defense, causes confusion, and leaves defenders out of place.

I know the worry is “well it’ll make the defense tired” and “well if you don’t get a positive play on first down you’re in trouble”. I would say with our defense the last thing a team wants is to play a catch up game. Also who cares if the first down play gets stuffed. Get to the line and go again and then again on third down. If you somehow go three and out (unlikely) then maybe play back ups for a few drives at a few positions on defense for a change or call a time out.

Bottom line is this should’ve been a top 3 offense and I think it is one of the most talented units still. However it’s hard to score 42 points and 500+ yards when you’re working in a 10 yard window and you’re milking the entire play clock. Never mind the fact that you’re leaving yourself with absolutely zero room for error. You had better score if you go slow.

The point of going tempo definitely did not go unnoticed by me. Kelly was the pseudo-inventor or at least an innovator of it at Oregon. It only works if you have the ponies to run it but we have all of the ponies.

Underutilizing WRs was also infuriating during crunch time in big games, especially against tcun. I could see the argument that with all the injuries on OL it made it tough to throw too many intermediate to deep routes, but the OL was actually pass blocking much better than they were run blocking after the injuries.

Maybe Day will figure it out on Saturday but it should have been figured out awhile ago.

Well this will be unpopular to say but I agree we need to lighten up. Now I think that should be the only true goal every year. However, the ridiculousness we create with that game IMO makes the team play tight and they’re playing not to lose.

Count down clocks are great, watching the previous games for lessons is great, and having the band visit it cool… but the M crossing out is stupid for example. I don’t know how it’d get done but the fans particularly need to relax about this game. When Ohio stadium cant ramp up the energy because we are more nervous than the players that’s a sign maybe we need to cool it.

Again not saying we should treat it as another game but I can tell you we are actively hurting this team by asserting pressure to what is already a very pressurized game.

What’s also great is tempo I think would help an offensive line that’s not elite. Will wear down the pass rush, will cause confusion, and eliminates the other teams ability to substitute.

Funny thing is on Saturday this will be our toughest game I think of the playoffs if we happen to win it. The reason why is the weather. There’s no two ways around it this games going to suck for the players. 18 degrees and some light wind? Man no thank you my fingers hurt just thinking about trying to tackle or catch a ball in that weather.

This team needs to throw the ball, go up tempo etc and that’s best done in warm weather or indoors.

I hear you brother. I just don't know how to do it personally. It's been baked into my DNA. And the expansion of the fucking CFP doesn't and shouldn't cause the Buckeye Nation to walk away or diminish the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

He looked plenty mobile against Purdue. He's not fast but quicker than the last 3 QBs and I'll take that over straight-line speed. Helps him navigate the pocket and sidestep blitzes, etc.

The approach to this year was a step in the right direction. Much more diverse run game with a much better OL. It just got blown up with OL injuries. Sayin provides an opportunity to expand the passing game and threaten the defense all over the field. No idea if Chip stays, wants to stay, but it'll be interesting to see how they move forward with a (hopefully) NFL level passer.
