Chicken wing fight leads to stabbing

WHEELING - A fight apparently began with the flight of a single frozen chicken wing Friday night and ended in a stabbing Saturday afternoon.
According to Wheeling police reports, at 2:34 p.m. Sunday, police arrested Thomas W. Elder, 35, of 2230 Chapline St., apt. 608, on charges of malicious wounding. Police responded to the incident at the Luau Manor apartments. An ambulance had been requested and police arrived to find Elder covered in blood.
He claimed to have been stabbed in the neck, though police could not see if there was a wound because the amount of blood covering him. Police later found only a small cut on the man's finger, though his eyes were blackened and he was treated for a broken nose.
Police found the other half of the altercation in an apartment near Elder's.
According to reports, there was blood all over the walls and resident Terry Walker, who claimed that Elder had stabbed him. At the time of the report, Walker was receiving treatment for tendon and nerve damage as a result of stab wounds.
Two witnesses told police that Elder came to the apartment, which belongs to a friend of Walker's, upset over an earlier argument.
Police reports from Friday say that at 10:25 p.m., officers were called to the same apartment on reports of an assault.
Walker was also the alleged victim of this assault. He told officers he was staying at his friend's apartment, and that the resident and a third friend were present when Elder came by to ask for beer and whiskey Friday. They gave some to the neighbor, who then returned and asked for coffee, according to Walker.
Elder also got into the freezer and took out frozen smoked sausage and chicken wings. When Walker told him he could not have these, Elder allegedly threw one of the chicken wings at Walker, giving him a 1-inch cut above the right eye.
The witnesses to the Saturday incident say the men began to argue in the kitchen, where Elder allegedly shoved Walker.
Then, witnesses said, the two began to hit each other, prompting Elder to grab a kitchen knife and allegedly slash and stab Walker, hitting him in the back of the head with one of Walker's crutches before leaving the scene.
Elder was arraigned and held on a $100,000 surety bond.
