Have OSU ticket prices topped out?

cincibuck

You kids stay off my lawn!
Yesterday I received an e-mail from the Athletic Department advising me that the alumni ticket sales deadline had been extended. Seems to me to be the first time this has happened in a long time.

I stopped buying alum tickets a few years back. I kept paying top dollar for Kent State, Ohio U., YSU, etc, etc. Not only that, but I kept ending up in the upper reaches of south stands.

The last few years I've managed to see such games- and Indiana and Cal - for far less than face value and for seats between the 20s.

I'm wondering if $85 to watch some team from Palookaville isn't more than some fans are going to continue to pay. (and if Hoke doesn't perform some kind of magic in Ann Arbor, $120 to watch the Wolverines)

I've gotten about 4 emails in the past 2 weeks from the athletic department reminding me about the tickets and then reminding me about the deadline extension. My friends and I had a discussion last week about this. There was the Spring Game pricing fiasco, too.

I think that the actual ticket prices are just one part of the demand equation. Parking is also through the roof. I know several longtime tailgaters who did not renew their spots because of the ridiculous increase in price. I'll always attend at least 1 game a year, but with HD television the way it is, and the price increases, I'm more than comfortable watching several games from my house.

Parking/traffic is the biggest deterrent for me...I went to a lot of games, but even when I was there in grad school and had season tickets, it started getting gradually worse and worse, and it is awful now. If you park in a garage, it takes hours to get out, and they keep pushing surface parking further and further away from the stadium. I agree that with HD and the ability to basically tailgate at home, the allure isn't what it used to be for me. It hasn't been "dollar value" for quite a while, unless you have Michigan or one of the bigger B1G games.

I attended just about every home game from 2004 through 2010 (not coincidentally, those were the years I was in school and I could walk to every game after pre-gaming at my apparent with friends).

Now I try to make it to one home game and one away game per year. Beyond that, the hassle and cost is way too much not to not sit at home watching on the big screen.

For the price of a drink at the stadium you can buy a nice six pack. For the price of parking (not to mention the tickets) you can buy enough food to cook for guests and so on. For the time it takes to drive, park and walk to the stadium you can cook/drink/eat/relax with friends.

The only games that are worth going to are the ones with crazy atmospheres and that limits it to a few per season and the ticket prices obviously go way up.

I just wish they would send me one. I've got Alumni tickets every year since graduating and they could even be bother to send me one email or letter this year. Plenty of other alumni mail though about trips I can't afford oh and the recent alumni special for season tickerts which I can't afford.

A cautionary tale from Michigan athletics that I have less than zero confidence Gene Smith will take heed of.

After a friend of mine took his kids to a game, he told me, “Michigan athletics used to feel like something we shared. Now it’s something they hoard. Anything of value they put a price tag on. Anything that appeals to anyone is kept locked away—literally, in some cases—and only brought out if you pay for it. And what’s been permanently banished is any sense of generosity.”

$20 spring game tickets, wooooooo!

1. Brady Hoke better step up his game if both schools want to keep "The Game" special and jack the price per ticket an extra $35.

2. Natibuck (see comments below the posted article) must not have seen the Lantern article that pointed out a similar drop in OSU student ticket sales. Of course, now we're talking about giving the students the choice of end zones, unlike the 60s when I frequently had "student seats" in 17 or 19 C.

3. 60 inch hi def my ass. Nothing beats being in the 'shoe on a football Saturday, having a cold one (read 'several') and a brat in the parking lot before and after. But I'm not gonna pay the equivalent of 1/4th a 60 inch hi def to sit in the South Stands and watch the Bucks play the MAC bum-of-the-month. If they can slide the scale up for Michigan, they can slide the scale down for what is, in essence, a scrimmage.

Exactly. I drive up from Virginia for every home game and will continue to do so. I wouldn't trade tailgating with my friends and the game day atmosphere at Ohio State for anything. If I have to have a vice in life this is the one that I gladly choose.

Maybe they have. After ordering the alumni season package this year I received an offer to buy an (additional) single game ticket too. I called and asked what this about as I never received that offer before. Basically I was told that I could buy an additional ticket if I wanted. I told them that I didn't think that it was fair for me to get season tickets and buy an additional ticket to an unspecified game when other alumni are being turned away for a pair of game tickets. I didn't buy an additional game ticket; besides I'm sure it wouldn't have been for the scUM game anyway. Possibly the price has reached a point where supply is slightly exceeding demand now and they are just trying to sell all the tickets (especially the "low tier" non-conference games) to anyone that will "pony up" the cash.

What does the alum season ticket package run?

For 2 tickets for the 2014 season (i.e. 7 games):

$655 each x 2 + $30 processing fee = $1340

Notes:
1. game tickets are $79 each, with the exception of the Premier Games vs. Virginia Tech and Michigan; tickets for the Premier Game vs. Virginia Tech will be $110 each and tickets for the Premier Game vs. Michigan will be $150 each (plus any applicable fees).
2. you also have to be member of the alumni association (i.e. pay their dues too). I do have a lifetime membership though.
3. my seats are never in the field of play (i.e. end zone or worse).
4. and (the worse part) it keeps going up every year.

Similar to UF. Last year they were $300 per season ticket, but you had to make a minimum of $400 donation to the Florida athletics association per ticket for the right to buy it and be a member of the alumni association. Needless to say I didn't buy it. A friend of mine gets them every year. Only nice thing is alumni get seats between the end zones in the shaded half of the stadium. Students and away team get the end zones and corners and the scorching hot east sideline.
