Have Lots of Evil Fun with this Phone Trick

Ok, so here's how I'm having fun:

I just called the guy that sits across from me on his desk phone. I'm giving him traffic reports on how to get home, and I've called him twice. He thinks he subscribed to some traffic alert subscription so I'm going to start taking him (we work in Dublin) clear across town on Broad Street starting tomorrow. This will be good.

I would imagine the goal of this website is to collect as many currently valid phone numbers as possible to sell to telemarketers...

This looks like a lot of fun but I think Mili is on the right track. The BIG topic today in database marketing is network analysis. Inter-relations between individuals are modelled and from that you figure out likelihood to respond to offers.

The logic of network analysis is that people can be identified by their communications with others as members of groups containing those people. If someone in the network responds to an offer, others in the network are more likely to respond. The increased likelihood of their response is a function of the nature of the relations (e.g., family, work), interests (e.g., sports teams, hobbies, professional interests), and other factors (gender, household income, etc) that characterize the group of people.

Once you know a network of people, you can begin to experiment with offers across the network. Analyzing responses helps then refine the model. Knowing the nature of the calls people are making to each other in text, which can be analyzed using textual analysis techniques such as content analysis and correspondence analysis, goes a long way to refining the model because it helps you identify the types of relations people have with each other.

So, my advice is that this may be fun and by all means enjoy it if you wish, but be advised that the information and content is being used by someone and that they will probably sell that information to help database marketers target you with offers. You may also be opening yourself to future scams.

if one is afraid that anything will be gained from network analysis, then use an anonymous proxy, maintain a firewall, and block/delete cookies. if one is afraid of telemarketers, then be added to the national do not call registry. as long as we surf the internet without a cloak, we're being tagged and we're tagging those with whom we are in contact. the internet is one big network analysis machine.

i can't imagine all the information gathered from the porn sites that few, if any, here visit.
