The name of the beast is NVIICONS.exe

What is it?

Why does it continue to come up as an invisible background process / application?

IceSword finds it, but cannot kill it.

Since the McAfee Update it keeps trying to work, but McAfee seems to be stopping it in its tracks.

What is it? How do I get rid of it?

BTW, I got rid of the sonofabitch. Tell you what, next time you are in similar trouble I'll tell you how I did the important vanquishing trick, after you pay me significant dollars.

Because I am in a generous mood I will now reveal the little trick to ridding oneself of this persistent actor NVIICONS.EXE.


First. If you have McAfee accept the recent update, it will not delete NVIICONS, but it will stop the SOB from completing it's load sequence, seen at C prompt.

Get IceSword.

Install IceSword

Under IceSword look for "files" under directory system32 under Wiindows.

Delete the file nviicons.exe while in IceSword (note, you cannot do this under Windows Explorer, only IceSword, as the file is some part or other of a package bearing the attributes of a rootkit, that means it has the invisibility flag permanantly set under Windows).

Reboot ...

All is well.
