I actually just received the press release e-mail from Hampton's Sports Information Director on Mathis' combine performance.
For Immediate Release February 27, 2005
Hampton’s Jerome Mathis Fastest Man At NFL Combine
Indianapolis, Ind. – Former Hampton University wide receiver Jerome Mathis turned heads with his speed yesterday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mathis not only had the fastest time to this point, but also what is believed to be the best in combine history at an electronically timed 4.32 seconds. Deion Sanders ran 4.28 in 1989, but his was hand-timed rather than the electronic times being registered this year. Mathis' hand-timed clocking was 4.25 according to longtime combine veterans Bill Parcells and Gil Brandt.
Mathis was the fastest wideout at 4.32. Indiana’s Courtney Roby was next at 4.36 and South Carolina’s Troy Williamson was third at 4.38 Arguably the most explosive player in I-AA, Mathis led the country with an average of 35.5 yards per return and set an I-AA record with five kickoff returns for touchdowns. The senior wide receiver, who is also the two-time NCAA East Regional champion in the 200-meter dash, returned kickoffs of 91, 99, 92, 80 and 93 yards respectively, the last coming during Hampton’s first round playoff game against William & Mary where he accounted for a school record 394 all-purpose yards.
