U. of Toledo basketball player dies at practice

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Toledo basketball player Haris Charalambous died today after collapsing during conditioning practice.
Trainers performed CPR on Charalambous until paramedics arrived. The 21-year-old backup center was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, university spokesman Lawrence Burns said.
The cause of death was not immediately known.
?The players are devastated,? Burns said. ?This has been a shock to our entire athletic program and university.?
Charalambous, a junior from Manchester, England, was expected to come off the bench this season. He played 23 games last season, averaging less than a point per game.
The workout had just started and the players were doing some light running when Charalambous collapsed on the court.
Burns said he didn't know if Charalambous showed any signs of distress. He also did not know if the player had any past health problems.
?We won't speculate until the autopsy is completed,? he said.
Coach Stan Joplin, who was recruiting in Arizona on Monday, cut short his trip to return to the school. Players met with assistant coaches after Charalambous was pronounced dead.
Charalambous attended the Hun School -- a prep school in Princeton, N.J. -- in 2003-04. In England, he was captain of the junior national team and played with the Manchester Magic in the senior men's league.
Last month, Dale Lloyd, a freshman football player at Rice, collapsed during a routine workout and died about 16 hours later.

every time i read about something like this i think of all the time in my life spent hunched over a trash can in the gym. how is it a "routine" workout kills people and here i was puking out my lunch, breakfast and anything i had eaten the last 18 years of my life out did nothing?

When i played football, we were running football suicide's outside in the august heat. I passed out and when i awoke i couldnt catch my breath. It started to fell like i was having a heart attack, the team doctor started to check my pulse and he said i had an irregular heart beat. For the next week i had to wear a heart monitor to take readings of my heart. Long story short the Dr said the heat and exhaustion caused my heart to start beating irregularly. He also said that in some cases this can cause a persons body to go into shock and die. My thoughts and prayers go out to this kids family.
