Let's everyone take a moment and give thanks for the Boston Tea Massacre today.
N.J. 'tea party' rallies to be held on July 4
Robert Sciarrino/The Star-LedgerA crowd of more than one thousand attended a tax day tea party on the Morristown Green in April 2009. Taxpayers are rallying against government spending, high taxes and the passing on a trillion dollar debt to the American children of the future on July 4.
MORRIS -- Pinned to Peter Glenn's shirt is a one-of-kind button that reads "Remember Boston 1773," the symbol of his conviction against "skyrocketing" taxes.
This July 4th, Glenn will take his symbolism to the streets, joining thousands of New Jerseyans and hundreds of thousands of people across the country expected to attend "tea party" rallies.
The rallies, modeled after the original Boston Tea Party, will protest rising taxes and call for smaller government.
"They said no tax increases. Well, they are going back on everything they said, and we're not happy about it," Glenn, a Morristown tea party planner, said of President Obama.
More than a dozen New Jersey communities have planned rallies Saturday, including Morristown, Clifton, Newton, and Wayne.
As many residents head for Independence Day ceremonies, those at rallies plan to celebrate their freedom by listening to speeches, donning tea bag earrings and tea bag-clad hats and spouting the group's motto: Taxed Enough Already.
"There is an ever-growing awareness and angry sentiment among the grassroots constituents throughout New Jersey and America about the policies that are coming out of Washington and hurting our citizens and our country," said organizer Jeffrey Weingarten, co-founder of the newly created Clifton tea party in Passaic County, and president of the Morristown tea party organization in Morris County.
