Dropped Pass Nets Hate Mail for Hamby
By John Porentas
It happened right there in front of 100,000+ and a national television audience.
OSU tight end Ryan Hamby dropped what a sure touchdown pass from Justin Zwick in the third quarter of the Texas game. The Buckeyes were forced to settle for a field goal on the drive. The play cost the Buckeyes four points, and the Buckeyes lost the game by three. To say that was a big play would be just a little bit of an understatement.
Hamby, of course, felt horrible. <TABLE width=130 align=left><TBODY><TR><TD>

"It just happened so fast. I knew I caught the ball and it just kind of got knocked out of my hands. I was just laying there thinking 'I wish that didn't happen,'" Hamby said.
The drop and subsequent loss has made the days since the game less-than pleasant for Hamby.
"I didn't sleep much (Saturday night)," said a rather bleary looking Hamby.
"I'm not going to lie about it. I think about it sometimes, but you have to move on," said Hamby.
Hamby is doing his best to move on and get ready for the upcoming game against San Diego State, but apparently some "Buckeye Fans" are not letting go so easily. Hamby has been the recipient of several hate mails since the game, as has OSU quarterback Justin Zwick.
"I got a couple," Hamby said.
"I'm not going to talk about them. They're just dumb things. In the scheme of life, you've got things going on around the world. It's just a game. I didn't approach it like that, but it is, it happened, and I can't do anything about it," Hamby said.
Email addresses for OSU students are easily obtained, but we suspect that harassment of student athletes by "fans" was not exactly what was envisioned when that arrangement was mandated. For Hamby and other student-athletes, it can be a problem, but not a problem that is totally unexpected.
"Fans are intense around here," said linebacker Bobby Carpenter.
" I guess that's what you get when you come to Ohio State. It's 105,000 screaming for you, or maybe they're booing you sometimes. Either way, that's what you sign up for so you have to live with it"
Carpenter came to Hamby's defense.

"Ryan played hard. Ryan wanted to catch that ball, believe me. There's no one on this team that wanted to catch that ball more than him. There's no one that's taking it harder than him. No one on this team is coming down on him about it."
