Gushing about Mia Hamm..

Yesterday was Mia's last game as a pro, and predictably the politically correct media was all over the story. The best was Dan Patrick last night comparing her to Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan. Yep, really. Uh, there is one problem when your fan base is 9-10 year old girls. These girls grow up and never remember who you are later. I guess now your full time job will be as a suffering Cubs fan.

$8 million a year for Nomar. I don't think she'll be suffering too much.

Yeah, I remember the first time I watched women's soccer, because of Mia. Um, no I don't. I don't think that I've ever watched an entire soccer game above my nephew's 5/6 year old team. Yep she was definitely a pioneer for her sport. :roll1:

I think that she, and the rest of the women who played on the world cup/olympic teams did a lot to publicize women athletes and maybe inspire a lot of young girls, but Babe Ruth? I don't think so.

Women's soccer will only be remembered for Brandy Chastain taking her shirt off in celebration. And even then, most folks wont remember her name anyway.

Mia Hamm?

I'd hit it... well at least back in her UNC days.... oh who am I kidding, i'd hit it in ten years.

Anyway... The Babe Ruth/Michael Jordan Comparisons would be accurate if Women's Pro Soccer (or international) had reached the popularity of Baseball or Basketbal at the Height of those two guys careers... (This incidentally, has everything to do with that considered "greatness" that we place on these two gentlemen... Barry Bonds might be a better hitter than Ruth was, or LeBron James may be better hoops player than Jordan, but it was their ability to elevate their sport that gives them that rarified level of greatness... to do what no one before had done and capture the imagination of the public.)

Theortically, what we see with Mia Hamm is more likely a Honus Wagner (OR whoever- but lets imagine that Wagner or whoever inspired Ruth to become what he was later.) to someone else's Ruth.... because like Ruth and Jordan, the talent will need to meet the opportunity.... which is an interest base in Women's sport, or soccer in particular... Hamm can maybe be Dr. J to someone else's Jordan...

I personally am a huge fan of Brazil's female soccer team.
