Guess the first play of the season

I think you got great points mili but I gata say a run for three reasons

1. If they pass the ball and it's incomplete you're looking at 2nd and 10
2. If they run the ball and pick up good yardage you can afford to then do the deep ball.
3. If they run the ball and get very little you can still either throw or pass.

Gosh this is a tough decision though! On one hand I see what ya'll are saying because everyone in the stadium is guessing beanie left, but on the other hand I believe tressel would think it would be in bad taste if he did a streak play on the first play?

Screw it I'll bypass this problem... Mo-Well's houses one from 92 yards out on the first play

Personally, I like passing against YSU because I want to see Boeckman in action. (Though I'm not going to get to see the game anyway.)
But I forsee JT pulling a 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust game. I bet we'll see that play-action as an opening play before the season is over (I'd love it against Wiscy's young secondary or ttuns' lack of CBs), but you gotta set the stage first.

I know it's not a creative pick, but Beanie right off of Barton. I just figure go with something that should be a strength off the bat. But as he proved with Michigan, a Beanie off tackle can turn into a 52 yd touchdown with just a little space.

My reasoning for a deep pass on the first play is threefold:

  1. If it's complete, well no further explanation needed
  2. If it's incomplete, the defense is now stretched, opening the running game
  3. If it's intercepted, it's no worse than a punt and a fair catch
I'm a firm believer that a long pass interception is the same as a punt........I'm just not a big fan of punting on the first play of the game.

1. With the defense loosened due to the bomb attempt, picking up 10 yards on the next two plays with Beanie behind our OL shouldn't be a problem
2. Again, everyone is expecting the run on the first play--exactly why we throw play-action
3. If we pass because we can't run, then the defense will be expecting pass won't they?

The whole point of the play-action deep pass is to do the unexpected with little negative side effects...

There are a lot of new guys on the offensive side of the ball, so if this offense at all resembles the 2004 offense through the first five or six games, punting on first down may be a good idea.

I would assume everyone on here can see the merits of a first-play bomb. However, I really doubt that Tressel sees any merit in it at all. When I saw this thread, my immediate thought was the play you have described. Then I stopped and realized that I don't coach college football. Any amount of money says that Tressel runs it right up the gut to kick off the new year (after the kickoff, of course ).

Edit: and by Tressel, I mean "Tressel sends BEANIE to run it right up the gut."

Hopefully our OL is dominate enough in this game that Tressel himself could run it.

I couldn't tell on television...was anybody streaking downfield? Was it possible that they were going for the bomb? I'm not sure cuz everyone was being a bit crazy where I was watching it, but it didn't look like play action though. In any case...kudos to those who thought pass. Definitely helped get TB off to a good start. Go Bucks!!!
