For each group, the last two games are played simultaneously, so opponents can't conspire to a mutually beneficial result by knowing the outcome of the other game.

Two teams from each group advance. A team gets 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. The first tiebreaker is goal-differential, the next is goals scored.

Team.........Pts..Goal-Diff..Goals-Scored
Chile.........6......+2..........2
Spain.........3......+1..........2
Switzerland...3.......0..........1
Honduras......0......-3..........0

Chile plays Spain on ESPN and Switzerland plays Honduras at the same time on ESPN2.

Chile wins the group with a win or a draw. If they lose, they advance unless Switzerland beats Honduras and 'out-goal-diffs' or outscores Chile on Friday.

Spain definitely advances with a win; and a win places them first in the group unless Switzerland 'out-goal-diffs' them on Friday. If they draw with Chile, they advance unless Switzerland wins.

Switzerland needs a win and a Spain non-win, or a win and enough of a goal-differential to catch either a losing Chile or a winning Spain.

Honduras can only advance with a win and a Spain loss with a total differential of at least 4 goals combined in both games.

I've thought it for a while, but I'm not sure if I've ever posted it, so I'll go on record.

I think Torres is very overrated. He scores because he's a striker on good teams (Spain & Liverpool), but he misses on a lot of chances that should be put away.

I had that typed but didn't post it until after he missed that early header. He just missed another good chance.

So if Spain beats Chile 1-0, and Swiss beat Honduras 1-0, WTF happens then? Same GD, same GF, same GA bet. Chile and Swiss. Is it head-to-head?

I believe that head-to-head does come into play if the GD and GF are the same. If the two had tied, they do a "random draw".

Great goal by Villa from distance, after the keeper came out but didn't get the clearance out of bounds.

Iniesta adds a goal, and (most of) Spain are showing their class.

Torres meanwhile tripped over his own feet during the play. The nearest Chilean player draws his second booking of the game for it and is sent off.

Estrada spiked him earlier...probably should have gotten a red then.

As it is, Spain/Portugal next up...that's an epic game for a round of 16 matchup.

Watching the Spanish Diving Team out there is pretty damn annoying. I'd like to see all 11 members of Chile flop on the ground at once like they've been shot the next time a Spanish player gets anywhere near any of them with the ball. Just all of them drop to the ground and grab their knees in unison. Fucking Euro pussies.
