For each group, the last two games are played simultaneously, so opponents can't conspire to a mutually beneficial result by knowing the outcome of the other game.

Two teams from each group advance. A team gets 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. The first tiebreaker is goal-differential, the next is goals scored.

Team.........Pts..Goal-Diff..Goals-Scored
Netherlands...6......+3..........3
Japan.........3.......0..........1
Denmark.......3......-1..........2
Cameroon......0......-2..........1

Japan plays Denmark on ESPN and The Netherlands plays Cameroon on ESPN2.

This group is easy to understand.

Netherlands is guaranteed to advance.

Japan must get a win or a draw against Denmark to advance. If Japan loses, they're out.

Denmark must beat Japan to advance (with a draw, Japan wins on goal-differential).

Cameroon has already been eliminated.

So, this set of games, as mentioned, doesn't carry much excitement. The game on ESPN2 won't get much attention.

Denmark has to win. Pretty basic, but I think (hope) Demark and Japan will play some exciting footie.

I don't know about the first 2 matches of the day, but I don't think either game featured a free kick goal. If that is accurate, Japan has scored the first and second ones of this World Cup.

They keep saying that there wasn't one, but I thought that Koren's goal in Slovenia's first game against Algeria was on a free kick, although it needed the Algerian keeper to lean the wrong way in order to go in.

Whew, got out of jail with that bet thanks to Denmark tanking the crap out of everything. Congrats to Japan though...3 goals when they only needed a draw, thumbs up.

Yeah, that was strange. Denmark are no world beaters, but Japan had looked rather futile in the attack in their first two matches. Japan winning 3-1 is the most shocking result of all the final opening round matches for me so far.

I agree, which is fucked up...who 6 months ago would have thought that a Japan win over Denmark would be more of a shock than a South African win over France.
