For each group, the last two games are played simultaneously, so opponents can't conspire to a mutually beneficial result by knowing the outcome of the other game.

Two teams from each group advance. A team gets 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. The first tiebreaker is goal-differential, the next is goals scored.

Team.........Pts..Goal-Diff..Goals-Scored
Ghana.........4......+1..........2
Germany.......3......+3..........4
Serbia........3.......0..........1
Australia.....1......-4..........1

Ghana plays Germany on ESPN and Australia plays Serbia on ESPN2.

Ghana needs a win or a tie to advance. If they lose, they need Australia to beat Serbia but not make up 5 goals on Ghana on Wednesday. Or they need Serbia to have a low-scoring tie with Australia.

Germany advances with a win. If they tie, they need Serbia to not get a win. If they lose, they're done.

Serbia advances with a win. If they tie, they need a non-tie between Germany and Ghana. If they tie and Germany wins, the goals will be tight.

Australia needs to win and either have Ghana win, or have Germany pound Ghana for the goal differential to swing the Aussie way.

My preference as to how this plays out (FWIW) - realistic scenarios only:

1) Australia beats Serbia, Ghana beats Germany. Result: US plays Australia in the next round. Germany goes home.

2) Ghana draws Germany, Serbia beats Australia. Result: US plays Ghana in the next round. Germany goes home.

2a) Germany beats Ghana, Australia beats Serbia or Serbia draws Australia and Serbia does not score more goals than Ghana today. Result: US plays Ghana in the next round. Germany and England will have to deal with each other.

3) Serbia beats Australia, Ghana-Germany does not end in a draw and the winner has a better goal differential than Serbia. Result: US plays Serbia in the next round.

4) Serbia draws Australia, Germany beats Ghana by more than 1 or by just one goal and Serbia scores 2 goals more than Ghana today. Result: US plays Serbia in the next round.

Basically, anything other than playing the Germans.

We need Germany to win. I would feel fine playing either Serbia, Ghana or Australia. I would like Australia, simply because they would be the weakest of the 3. Ghana would be fine too, much tougher though. Serbia would be a challenge. They are very defensive. They do not concede many goals. My hope is that Germany and Australia win today.
But for that to happen, you have to make sure Australia makes up the GD to Ghana.

I'd really love playing Australia in the next round, but I'd say Ghana and them winning make it a little easier. No way Australia wins by 2 or 3, if they even do. Germany needs to either win the group, or not advance at all, which seems likely.

All sorts of possibilities here. Name-wise, Germany strikes the most fear but they are one of the youngest teams in the WC this year. The old stars are gone and it remains to be seen if the news guys are their equals. They looked good their first match, not so much the second one.

We owe Ghana from 2006, as they were our third and final match - a defeat. We seemed to match up well with the Aussies a couple weeks ago. I don't know much about the Serbs, other than they knocked off the Germans last week.

Let's kick this shit off.

So Ghana looks good the first 15. So athletic, strong, and skillful.

That's what she said. :tongue2:

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Now seriously, I really don't know who I would rather play between these two. They both have some very strong points. I think Germany being a young team has the ability and drive to hang with the USA attacking for 90+ minutes.
