Back to the drawing board for the Buckeyes.

Overnight, multiple media reports indicated that Creighton head coach Greg McDermott would be replacing Thad Matta as the head coach at Ohio State. However, McDermott, who has been at Creighton since 2010 tweeted on Thursday afternoon, that he would be remaining in Omaha.

Barring a change in McDermott’s status, OSU athletic director Gene Smith will now have to return to the list of candidates that he mentioned to The Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy early this morning.


Gene Smith told me, "I'm not done" and "I've got a list" but would not comment further or confirm names on the list. Indicated it's long.

Other coaches rumored to be on the Buckeyes’ list are Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, and current Ohio State assistant Chris Jent. But perhaps that list is about to grow.

Matta was let go as Ohio State’s basketball coach on Monday, following a 13-year run that saw him post the best winning percentage in Big Ten history, and amass more wins than any coach in program history.
