Greg Gillum (Chief of Staff Cincinnati)

Great read...

Sunday Special: Gillum’s move lets Meyer tinker

There was no secret Urban Meyer had to do something to his coaching staff after the 2015 season. Sure, coaches are going to leave every season, but Meyer and the Buckeyes are still chasing one exodus that hurt them in 2015.

When Tom Herman left to become the head coach at Houston, the offense was not going to be the same. Meyer made a mistake not in promoting Ed Warinner to co-offensive coordinator, but in how he structured his game-day staff assignments. Warinner, who doubled as the offensive line coach and wanted to remain on the sideline to communicate with his unit, never made the adjustment to in-game play caller from the sideline.

Some of that lies at Meyer’s feet. He hired Tim Beck to be the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator under Warinner, but Beck was in the booth on game days.

The offense was a disaster for much of the 2015 season. The Buckeyes were able to look past their organizational warts because they won.

Until Michigan State.
