BELLVILLE — Grant Reed is superstitious, so he wore the same Ohio State attire he wears every time the Buckeyes take the field.
On Saturday, it paid off.
He watched the Ohio State-Michigan game with his parents, Troy and Denise Reed, and his brother, Collin, 9, in Ann Arbor, Mich., where the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines 42-41.
The 13-year-old Bellville boy made national news during the summer when he named his cancerous brain tumor Michigan. The reason? The huge Buckeye fan knew Ohio State always beats Michigan, and he set about doing everything in his power to do the same thing.
Upon hearing Grant’s story, OSU coach Urban Meyer visited him at Children’s Hospital in Columbus and Michigan coach Brady Hoke invited Grant and his family to see Ohio State take on Michigan in Ann Arbor.
After the game, Grant, still wearing his lucky A.J. Hawk No. 47 OSU jersey, said he never lost faith in the Buckeyes.
The best part of being in Ann Arbor for his first time?
“Winning,” Grant said.
Would he ever root for Michigan now that he has met the coach and been their guest?
“No,” said Grant, who lives, eats and breathes Ohio State football.
