Granite countertop scare.

Hang on Sloopy
I have been considering granite countertops, however recent stories by NBC and the New York Times state that granite contains high levels of uranium and releases radon gas.

Any granite owners? Thoughts, concerns. Thank you.

Let me be on the record as being in favor of your purchase of radioactive gas emitting countertops. :)

It's interesting that the Rice professor who is publishing a paper on the article is quoted as using a "spectrometer" to do his testing.

Hopefully that is a typo on the part of the journalist.

I think you are misreading the original article.

The issue is that with the hardness of granite counter tops if you have a sufficiently sharp knife with a sufficiently hard blade you can inadvertently split an atom while you are doing your chopping. That is the source of any radon gas.

You can avoid the problem simply by not slicing too hard, by using dull knives, or by staying away from vegetables that are high in radon - such as carrots and cucumbers.

So apply a few common sense principles and enjoy your new counter tops.

Countertops, schmountertops, I just heard there's this thing called the sun that is giving off radiation and we're exposed to it every day! We're doomed! :reaper:

Obviously the answer is to have a granite cell phone shield!

Why Choose Granite?Granite is an igneous rock (formed by heat) found deep within the Earth's crust. Once quarried, cut, polished, & sealed granite is nearly impervious to scratches, heat, etching, staining, or weathering and cell phone radiation. It is truly one of Mother Nature's most versatile and beautiful creations.
