Gore's commission on aviation safety

ashlandbuck

Banned
In 1996 after TWA flight 800 exploded, Gore chaired this commission.
His preliminary report recommended strong counterterrorism measure that included better passenger screening, more bomb sniffing dogs and various other security measures.
After the preliminary report was released the airline industry screamed loud and hard about the measures.Airline Lobbyists, including Sen. Tom Daschle's wife Linda jumped all over Al Gore and his report fearing that these measure would badly hurt the industry. Gore wrote to one lobbyist and promised that the measures shouldn't result in any loss revenue.
The VERY NEXT DAY the Democratic national committee received a $40,000 donation from TWA. In the next two weeks checks were coming in from a lot of major airlines. United airlines donated $100,000 and over the next several months, Linda Daschle's clients American and Northwest gave $300,000 to the Gore- Clinton Campaign.
After the election you will never guess what happened! Gore rewrote the recommended security measures!!!!
Three commission members, including CIA director John Deutsh complained and promised to bring political heat down on Gore if he did not reinstate the original preliminary report and safety measures.
So how did Gore react to this? He backed down to Deutsch and restored the safety measures but put no time line on when these measures would be required. So in effect, the measures he restored were absolutely meaningless.
Our vice president sold our security for $500,000.
Where was Richard Clarke during all this?

Here's some more interesting stuff(WARNING: It's from Drudge. Please don't carp if you don't like that. Don't read it. Don't believe it. I don't care. It's not my problem. This is presented with no further comment from me)
On July 29, 1999, Richard Clarke was scheduled to appear before the Senate Special Committee on the Y2K computer scare.

Senator Bob Bennett (R-UT) chaired the hearing, and made the announcement that Richard Clarke would not be appearing before the committee -- due to a directive by the National Security Council.
........
Last night, into the evening, we were notified that the legal staff of the National Security Council had determined that it would be inappropriate for Mr. Clarke to appear. I have just spoken to him on the telephone. The rule apparently is that any member of the White House staff who has not been confirmed is not to be allowed to testify before the Congress. They can perform briefings, but they are not to give testimony. And that in response to that rule, Mr. Clarke will not be coming.

What?!? You mean special interest money influences our policy makers?!?! There's a news flash. :roll1:

I'm sure there's loads of examples of this from either side of the aisle - not condoning it by any means, but the mega $$$ in Washington has long been a problem.
