Woody's Place in the Ohio Union will be closing at the end of autumn quarter, in advance of the demolition of the student union, planned for February 2007.
As part of the plan to build a new student union, Woody's Place will serve its last cold one, before being demolished in February.
Jennifer Slezak, student manager of Woody's Place, said the only place to stop and get beer on campus will be gone by the end of finals week.
Woody Hayes was one of the most famous coaches Ohio State and college football, has seen. He was loved and hated, but the one thing that could not be debated was his record as a coach.
From 1951 to 1978, Woody Hayes led the OSU football team to five national championships, 13 Big Ten titles produced 56 All-Americans and three Heisman trophy winners. With a record of 238-72-10, Woody Hayes has the best winning record of any coach in OSU football history.
To honor Hayes, Woody's Place was created when the Ohio Union was built in 1950, said Operations Manager Ramy Farid.
"Woody Hayes is a legend," Farid said. "This place was made for him.
"Woody's is special because we use meal plan for food and we serve wine and beer."
Slezak, a senior majoring in art, has been working at Woody's for three years, and said she said likes working there because it is easy and it pays well.
"We're special because we are the only sports bar on campus, (and) the only place that sells beer," she said.
Slezak said most of the business at Woody's Place comes from freshmen and sophomores, and there are many new faces because it's fall quarter.
Regulars Jake Mayer and Michael Wong are roommates who make sure to stop by Woody's at least three times a week.
"They have better food than the commons, and the Market Place is too busy, so this is a good compromise," said Mayer, a sophomore in math and physics.
He said he likes he can come into Woody's Place, grab a barbecue chicken sandwich - his favorite thing on the menu - and sit down in a big comfortable chair to watch SportsCenter on the big screen TV.
"It's unique. It's the only place in the Union that takes swipes, (and) they have food you can't get anywhere else," Mayer said. "It's not some run down bar or something. It's actually a nice place."
Mayer, who is also a bass player, said he has always wanted to go to the Open Jam Nights at Woody's.
Wong said, however, Open Jazz Nights are one of the reasons he likes Woody's so much.
"Last year I came down here for Open Jazz Night. It's really neat to have spaghetti and meatballs while listening to jazz. It's that only place on campus you can do that," said Wong, a sophomore in math and physics. "I'll miss having a place that's not crowded and has really good food."
Rachel Rote, spokeswoman for the Ohio Union Activities Board, said My Beloved Tragedy will kick-off the Goodbye to Woody's Concert Series starting tonight at 7 p.m.
