Delaware is best state for workers: study Tue Oct 25,10:49 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Delaware is the best state for workers in the United States, getting high marks for job opportunities, job quality and workplace fairness in a study published on Tuesday.

New Hampshire, Minnesota, Vermont and Iowa also scored high in the Work Environment Index (WEI), developed by researchers at the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Louisiana ranked last, while Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina and Utah also got poor marks.

The index ranked working environments in terms of average pay, benefits, job opportunities, equal treatment of men and women and ability to unionize.

It is the first index to evaluate worker climate instead of business climate on a state-by-state basis, its authors said.

There is a consistent link between the quality of a state's environment for workers and its economic health, the authors said, and high-ranking states have faster growth and lower poverty rates than those at the bottom of the list.

What they don't mention is how shitty it is to live out here. I moved to Newark, DE about a year ago and it is wicked expensive.

DEBuckeye,
Where do you go to watch games out here?

Funny you should mention that- my wife and I have talked numerous times about moving back to the midwest, where things are normal.

I normally watch games at home, but if I were going out I'd probably hit either Damon's or Champps, both on Rt 202. There's also a Charcoal Pit sports bar on Kirkwood Hwy that would probably be good.

You have only lived there a year and you are already using wicked in your sentences? Get out while you can!

You beat me to it bfool.

I thought those NEnglands using wicked sweet was just something you saw on SNL but as you and I both found out this past summer, it's unfortunately true.

BTW, is there any more unattractive accent than a NE accent? :roll1:

My cousins, from Maine, always said "wicked good."

The best accent I ever heard was a girl in my first Spanish class in undergrad. She was a southern belle from Georgia. She sat in the back of the room and everytime she spoke every guy would turn to watch her. Incredibly cute and the way she spoke spanish with that southern accent, man oh man!

As always I ask you to consider the source. Umass, think that had something to do with the decision on the factors?

I will say I am surprised to see Utah and Texas were so low and fricking Iowa and Vermont were so high.

I have customers in all those states and Iowa and Vermont are not garden spots for jobs in any way. In Texas you could quit or get fired today and get a job tomorrow.

Yes, I hear "wicked" all the time. I'm not a huge fan of the NE accent either. Manfred says that some of his brightest students just don't sound all that bright when they speak in a thick Boston accent. Wicked hard to understand sometimes.
