I typed that 6:50 out incorrectly but I did mean 16:50. I haven't been in the military for 5 years so my memory is off.

Would you agree that during basic training many of these kids couldn't even pass those times?
Don't get me started. Those damn Drill SGTs need to get their stopwatches callibrated, because half of the Soldiers coming out of Basic and AIT come to me unable to pass the APFT. We have had to go so far as to set up a Special PT group in our Battalion specifically targeting Soldiers directly coming from Basic Training because it has been determined that they are "physically and mentally not capable of handling our Unit's PT program". Playstation Generation. When I was a kid, it was punishment to keep me inside the house....now, it is punishment to make them go outside.

Running miles is for pussies!
Tell your teacher / coach real men run gassers. Sideline to sideline 4 times with full pads. I do not remember my times, under a minute?, but whatever it was it was not fast enough to avoid more gassers.:mad2:

Can't you walk a mile in 16 minutes? 8 minutes seems slow unless you have really short legs.

Get one of these and tell your mom to quit smoking.

Why would he want to eat a miniature prosthetic leg?

And do you think his mom is really smokin?

I came to thinking of this the last two days. Yesterday, in my personal fitness class, which is full of athletes(mostly football players) we were told our final exam would be a timed mile.

The teacher, told us anything under 6:20 was a "A", 6:21 up to 7:10 "B", and so on.

I ran it in just under/around(He just told me I got a "C") 8:00 minutes. Very disappointing for me. Knowing that about a week and half before that, I ran it under 7:00. The difference being this time I wasn't ready to run it, and it was very humid outside(And this was 8:00 in the morning). And my asthma was bad in the humidity.

The funny thing about it, the guy that teaches my class, that is his only class of the day, the rest of the day he is a security/administrator guy. I asked the other two teachers who teach personal fitness classes also what was a "A" in their classes. One said under 8 minutes and the other said 10 minutes.

So just wondering, is this a "terrible" time. Or what?

Its a decent time for someone that doesnt run regularly.

Im a cross country runner, so anything over 5:15 is disappointing for me. My PR is 4:37 in the one mile.

There ya go, S&G, finally a good runner (along with Brewtus) shows up on this thread. Pretty impressive.

Back in my day (graduated HS in 1968), it seemed like everyone under 180-200lbs who was in decent condition could run a 6 min. mile (my PR--4:56, and I was not a good runner).

Somebody help me here, but didn't Woody used to require guys to run a 6 min. mile at the beginning of camp? Maybe gave the big boys something like 7 min. If I remember right, players had to run a timed mile every day until they passed.

Most high school kids dont know how to run the mile. They either start like a bat out of hell, or start off way too slow.

Consistency is what you want. You want your 400 splits to be at most only a couple seconds different from each other, with your last one being your fastest by at least a few seconds thanks to your kick.

Lets just say, my first lap was fast. I was huffing by the third lap and walking the curves, running the straights. I never said that my time was good. Personally, I knew it was bad. I just can't put my finger on why my time was over a minute slower than my previous time. I should've paced myself before hand, and not tried to go all out like it was the 400.

There's your answer. You can't walk any part of a mile and have a good time. I just can't get past the fact that you started out sprinting. Who doesn't know to pace yourself while running a mile?

I wasnt calling you out or anything like that, I was just saying most high school kids in general. Alot of my friends dont think it takes anything to run a sub-5:00 mile, then they get out on the track and cant finish the mile even.

Sometimes if your anxious/nervous/etc. it hurts your breathing before the race, you dont take your normal deep breathes collecting your normal amount of air. That could have had something to do with it.

I see what you're saying, and by no means am I calling you out on your views on running, but most kids at my school that take Health & P.E. do not run very solid mile times. By no means, would I consider myself fast at all (in fact I have such a goofy running form that it amazes me that I can run an adequate/decent mile time), but in my class the fastest time ran was 6:08, or thereabouts. I know for a fact that the track kids can run times comparable or around your times, but that's all I can think off the top of my head that can even run below 5:45(?) or somewhere around there.

I'm in pretty good shape, but I'm not saying that I couldn't be better. It just comes to prove how sad and pathetic it is that many kids in today's modern American society are out of shape, and would rather play video games or surf the internet (kind of like I'm doing right now :wink2: ), instead of getting themselves into the best physical shape possible, or even acceptable shape.
