Golden State Warriors (6x NBA Champions)

Klay Thompson Had the Saddest Walk Back to Locker Room After Possibly Last Game With Warriors

In Tuesday’s loss, Thompson went 0-for-10 in 31 minutes, recording his second scoreless game under coach Steve Kerr. The 34-year-old is coming off a career-low season in which he averaged 17.9 points per game and shot 38.7% from three; in February, he was benched for the first time since his rookie season. Several years removed from his two major leg injuries in 2019 and ‘20, Thompson is set to hit free agency this summer

Steve Kerr Addresses Klay Thompson's Future With Warriors After Ugly Elimination Game

Thompson has publicly stated multiple times that he'd like to remain with the Warriors for his entire career. The Warriors, as Kerr did again Tuesday, have said the same.

But the two sides couldn't agree to a contract extension before or during the 2023-24 campaign. While Golden State gave forward Draymond Green a four-year contract extension worth $100 million last June, reports swirled that the Warriors and Thompson haven't been on the same page in terms of years and money on his next deal.

Charles Barkley Has Blunt Message for Klay Thompson and His Future With Warriors

It is impossible to disagree. Thompson was a shade of his former self this season, to the extent that he got benched for a stretch midseason. His counting stats are fine on the surface; the shooting guard averaged 17.9 points per game on 43.2% shooting from the floor. But for much of the year it seemed like Thompson was the only guy who didn't know he wasn't a superstar anymore. He actively damaged his team's efforts to win by regularly trying to shoot himself out of slumps and he is no longer a plus defender.

Hate to see it.

I kind of liked the Warriors at the start of their run, fun to watch. But I don't like how they bailed on Oakland to go to SF. Can't say I'll feel bad for the owners once fans stop showing up when they revert back to their pre-Curry/Klay era of performance.

Warriors prepared to part ways with Klay Thompson in free agency after 4 championships, 13 years, per report

Thompson, 34, is an unrestricted free agent

The Golden State Warriors drafted Klay Thompson 13 years ago with the No. 11 pick. They almost traded him for Kevin Love 10 years ago, right before he became a perennial All-Star, a gold medalist and an NBA champion. Thompson and the Warriors won three titles in four years after one of the best non-trades in NBA history, then he tore his ACL in the 2019 NBA Finals, tore his Achilles during a pickup game and, after missing two full seasons, returned to win another title in 2022. He is one of the most beloved players Golden State will ever have, a crucial part of a dynasty and half of the Splash Brothers.

And his run with the Warriors is (likely, reportedly) over.
