Let me guess, price of oil is going up because of Katrina. I fucking hate the damn oil companies.... 275BILLION dollars in PROFIT last QUARTER and they keep raising prices? Fuck em

the today show this morning said this as well. they said it is not even known if many of the offshore oil companies were going to have to shut down production at all, or at most for 2 days. the price increase is based on speculation of shutdown. Cartels can do that.

its also based on the fact that new orleans port brings in 1 million barrels a day and that no shipments have come in for a few days due to the threat of the hurricane.

All of which makes sense if the damned stuff is in real short supply, hence it is a seller's maerket -- one in which some stations will be going dry and those with the goods charge the extra freight.

Except ...

That's not what is happening here.

What we have here is a failure to rein in greed at every turn. Cartel is the right term. All the pumps will have gas in them, and the price will STILL go up.

Remember what we used to call this fucking thing?

I was under the impression that if we reduce our demand for oil, then the price will be dropped. As much as it seems as the oil industry is immune to the laws of economics, I think our consumption habits are the sole reason for why we are paying such a high price for gas. I don't know how often I see some soccer mom driving a Ford Excursion or Chevy Suburban just sitting in traffic by herself. Is that space honestly necessary? Now I'm the last person to say we should all be driving hybrids, but our insatiable lust for these gas guzzlers is why we gotta break our bank to fill up our cars. Fuck the environment, this is an economic issue.

Maybe I'm a little biased against SUV's cause I spend most of my weekends under the hood of a Japanese import, but 90% of those things on the road today are hardly necessary.

Some of you guys have some interesting takes on the commodities market. :roll2:

In short, you give the oil companies way too much credit. I've been talking to a wall about it, apparently, but maybe this article can shed some light on the situation that I've not been able to convey:

Meanwhile, our government has done plenty to limit domestic supplies the last 30+ years - the last American refinery was built in 1974 - while demand keeps going up and up. The reality of such behavior catches up with you, sooner or later.
