They had a free preview showing of "Glory Road" at the Marcus Theaters at Crosswoods tonight, so I went to go see it. The storyline is kind of "Hoosiers" meets "Remember the Titans", so some of it will seem familiar. Of course, those are two very good movies to be compared to.
It's based on the real life story of the Texas Western College 1966 basketball team (now University of Texas at El Paso) that emerged pretty much from nowhere to challenge the established national powers of the day behind a lineup of mostly unknown black players, at a time when southern schools featured all white teams.
Surprisingly, the basketball content is very good, despite the fact that the primary plot focuses on racial and social issues. This is an excellent movie both for people who are and aren't big sports fans, and is well-written.
Thankfully, the previews don't give too much of it away, and I'm trying not to either. :) A couple of spoilers that I will drop is that one Big Ten team is portrayed in the movie (not OSU), and a young player named Pat Riley pops up on Adolph Rupp's UK squad. It's good college basketball history.
"Glory Road" comes out next Friday, and I definitely recommend checking it out.
