Former Minnesota coach Glen Mason said he still disagrees with the decision to fire him after last season.

MINNEAPOLIS -- In taking over the Minnesota football program, in dubbing the sparsely populated mud-hut hamlet containing jaded Minnesota football fans "Gopher Nation," Tim Brewster promised to accomplish the impossible, and the impossible is what he has wrought.
Brewster has made Glen Mason the most popular football coach in town.
"I don't know if that's a compliment or not," Mason said with a laugh. "If it is, thank you."
Mason, a former Ohio State player and assistant coach, sounded like he was in fine spirits, and why not? In the last year, he has gone from hearing "Fire Mason" chants to getting fired after the first year of a five-year deal to having Brewster's 1-7 start make him look like a genius in exile.

"Sure, I would have liked to have won more games and taken the Gophers to the Rose Bowl, but at the same time I felt like I did the best job I could, and I did it the honest way. No one ever questioned my honesty. My integrity is in place and the program was better when I walked out than when I walked in."
I do not believe this to be the case.

He paved the way for their on campus stadium. That alone will allow someone else to be successful there. He built the foundation for a successful future, considering the teams history prior to Mason, what more could you ask of him?

I agree. Minnesota has been a cesspool to me, ever since that attack on the basketball team. I hope he does get the job at Nebraska and that he is successful there.

Glen Mason will be a Big Ten Network television analyst for a Gophers football game for the first time when Minnesota plays at Ohio State on Sept. 27. The former Gophers coach will celebrate a more significant milestone before the game when he serves as an honorary captain for Ohio State, the school where he played and worked as an assistant coach.

Glen Mason likes what he sees of Tim Brewster's Gophers.
"They're undefeated, which is good; you can't get any better than that," Mason said Tuesday.
Mason coached the Gophers to seven bowl games in 10 seasons. His successor, Brewster, is in his second season after a 1-11 start.
"You look at that team that won one game last year and four weeks into this season, they've won four games," Mason said. "I know some people might say, well, they didn't play anybody. I beg to differ on that."
People used to say the same about Mason's nonconference schedule. "The critics look at a particular situation, but you've got to look at what's going on nationally," he said. "There are a lot of people playing the same type of schedule that Minnesota is. Now, as you get ready to go into the Big Ten schedule the next eight weeks, you're going to have enough tough tests.

Well since none of you probably follows Minney football at all (why would you) I figure I would jump in. I had this in another thread on the Minney game

I am not a Mason hater--I appreciate lots of good things he did for our program, but I can understand why it was time to move on.

He brought us back from a doormat program into a national stage. We had some good teams (1999, and 2003) and had arguably the best running game this conference has ever seen producing an NCAA record 2 1000 yard rushers 2 years in a row.

He helped secure funding for a stadium, and brought us to 6 bowls in 10 years. Football fans around the country still remember Maroney and Barber. The win over PSU in 99 was one of the best sporting highlights of my life.

But he had some on field and off field problems. On field was his inability to field even average defenses. Mason is the proud owner of the largest and 3rd largest come from behind bowl losses in NCAA history. Many more in conference play.

Gophers ran for 424 yards against Michigan and lost.

Gophers had a 38-7 lead in the 3rd quarter against Texas Tech and lost.

Gophers had a 24-8 lead in the 3rd against NC State and lost.

etc etc...

He 37-52 against BCS opponents (we were the poster child for cupcake scheduling under him) and he was 11-43 against the top 3 Big Ten Schools (OSU, Michigan, and PSU) and our two biggest Rivals Iowa and Wisky.

He referred to die hard rivalries as "trinket games" and used the word "rebuilding" in his 10th year in charge. Both of these statements really [censored]ed off the fan base.

Minney had the worst graduation rate in the Big Ten for football in his tenure.

I think he lost a lot of passion after the tOSU pass over, and never seemed the same.

He couldnt recruit. He hit Ohio pretty good, but Brewsters first class with a 1-11 record is better than Mason's best coming off his 10-3 season.

Mason got the Gophers from total losers to 8-4 and 7-5 year in and year out, however that seemed like the ceiling with him at the helm. We were once a powerhouse (6 national titles) and fans think we deserve better.

Thats my two cents. I saw him this summer and shook his hand and said "thanks" and he seemed friendly about it. A nice guy, and wish him the best. We just want something with more passion and a higher ceiling, esp with the new stadium.
