Bearcat QB seeks revenge
Loss to OSU still stings

By Gary Parrish
August 10, 2004

Gino Guidugli hates Ohio State.

He won't exactly say this, of course, not with a reporter and a notebook in front of him. But just understand that he despises the Buckeyes and would love to beat them this year in his final opportunity to do so.

"I've got one more shot at them," said Cincinnati's senior quarterback. "We owe them one."

Around here the big game on Sept. 4 features the University of Memphis and Ole Miss. Leading into that weekend, Tigers and Rebels is all anybody will discuss up and down I-55.

In Ohio, however, they couldn't care less.

Not with the Bearcats and Buckeyes scheduled for national television that same afternoon. Not with the perennial underdog that is UC taking on the in-state and national power of OSU. Not with the endless story lines, among them:

A large portion of the UC roster is made up of in-state guys, most of whom were shunned by Ohio State in the recruiting process.

Former Buckeye defensive coordinator Mark Dantonio is the new coach at Cincinnati. He replaced Rick Minter, who was fired after a 5-7 season that ended with three straight losses.
And . . .

The last time these two schools met, in 2002, OSU had to come from behind in the fourth quarter, then take advantage of two Cincinnati receivers dropping balls in the final minute to win, 23-19.
It stands to reason that if either Jon Olinger or George Murray had caught those extremely catchable passes from the arm of Guidugli, UC would've beaten Ohio State for the first time since 1897. Furthermore, OSU probably wouldn't have gone on to win the national championship.

"You take nothing from a loss, not a (darn) thing," Guidugli said after that defeat in which he threw for 324 yards. "It hurts, hurts so bad. We had the No. 6 team in the country on the ropes, and we couldn't knock them out."

Predictably, Guidugli has calmed since that disappointing loss.

But not much.

He still thinks he should have won that afternoon, still believes that, at least on that day, his Bearcats were better than Ohio State, Maurice Clarett and the whole bunch.

"Gino played very well that game," Dantonio acknowledged, noting that because he had to prepare for Guidugli that year he's seen the UC quarterback many times, which made the transition to Cincinnati easier. "Right now, I think he's the best quarterback in Ohio."

Even better than the guys at your former school, Ohio State?

"I," Dantonio repeated, "think he's the best quarterback in Ohio."

With that, let the bulletin-board material begin. And if Guidugli has his way, he'll confirm his coach's claim next month and snap Cincinnati's 100-plus-year victory drought against Ohio State.

"We gave them a run for their money last time," Guidugli said. "Like I told you, we owe them one."

Found this on a UC site, not earth shattering smack but slightly annoying none the less.

The UC fans are signing the same song as Marshall and NCSU right now-"best team in years/we catch OSU reloading/we almost beat them last time/yadda,yadda,yadda".

If you believe the different MB's out there OSU isn't going to win a game untill we play IU and there are going to be 10 B10 champs and about 100 NC's. :wink2:

I think Gino was drinking again...we keep discussing Dantonio's impact on this game, but what about Snyder? I would bet he is going to make a statement to get out of MD's shadow. Gino will wake up sunday wishing he kept his drunk mouth shut

They do owe us one

Face it, everything they say is right. They had us on the ropes. Anybody who remembers the end of that game remembers both those balls were very, very catchable. The football gods were smiling on OSU that afternoon.

Until Zwick and/or Smith are proven, Guigulagli (sp???) IS the best QB in Ohio. I see nothing disrespectful or boastful about anything that either he or Dantonio have said.

It is the coach's job to make the kids truly think they can win if they play mistake-free. When has a successful coach ever said "It will be a moral victory is we beat the spread."

I hope we beat them up so bad the second string gets to play the whole 4th quarter, but I don't think its gonna happen.

as a resident of Cincinnati and an ex-resident of Clifton (where UC is located), I can say from experience that they absolutely despise OSU with all their being. I'm friends with 3 guys that were on the 2002 starting OL for UC and you better believe those guys wanted to hurt OSU. Every player on that team looks at OSU as the team that didn't want them and they want revenge. It's weird though, it comes off as a sort of envy issue and hurt feelings more than anything else...that, and they get sick and tired of OSU getting all the attention.

People in Cincy are different than any other city in Ohio. It's not an OSU town here. They live and breath UC and Xavier here and could give a shit about OSU. That's not to say there isn't alot of fans of OSU cause there are quite a few. I see someone with OSU gear on everyday almost, but the hatred towards OSU is huge especially in the Clifton area.

I've met Gino a few times. Very, very cocky but he's proven that he's one of the best around. I wouldn't look past this team at all, especially if Gino's healthy. This kid will take any pounding you can give him and he'll get up and spit in your face and laugh. That's just the kind of guy he is.

But I disagree completely with the "best in Ohio" comment. The best in Ohio is right up in Akron with Frye.

I also remember MoC not playing, multiple OSU turnovers, miracle catches by UC players earlier in the game, a Gamble TD called back by a bullshit penalty, OSU playing flat and UC playing like it was the freakin superbowl, a 4th and 1 spot we got screwed on and still getting the W. They played well, but be fair-OSU helped them quite a bit.

The difference between an elite team and a C-USA team is that our B game is better than their A game. Problem for UC this year is they don't get us flat-they get us for a home opener, with former OSU coaches and the memory of '02 still fresh in a lot of OUR players minds. No ambush here and that means no W for UC once again.

They have a lot to be optimistic about in Cincy. Returning 23 seniors to a team that went 2-6 in conference USA says it all. Ofcourse if you ask them, they think that the 5-7 mark they put up last year just as easily could've been 7-5. That near win against us two years ago basically spring-boarded them into mediocrity. Sad really.

100vcash says Sept. 5th Guidugli is back to hitting the sauce again.

Personally I want JT to break out the whopping stick on.
Last time they had this game Circled on theIr caleNdar and nobody Came to plaY except Will Allen.
This year it's a different story,
its perSonal, and even oUr coaches should want to eXact their revenge. Unleash the hounds JT because we don't lose OOC games in the Shoe, and we certainly don't lose in the Shoe to teams that couldn't even play .500 ball.... in a basketball conference nonetheless.

I hope you were being sarcastic. Even with a steep learning curve, if your team sucked before, and you come back with essentially the same team, doesn't it stand to reason that they'll still suck?
