Giants send struggling pitcher Barry Zito to bullpen

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)?Barry Zito was demoted to the bullpen Monday by the San Francisco Giants, who hope the former ace can correct his problems by working in relief.

Zito, who only 16 months ago signed a $126 million, seven-year contract with the Giants to lead their rotation, was informed of the move in a meeting with manager Bruce Bochy.

?I?m certainly not happy with it, by any means,? Zito said. ?But this is the bed that I?ve made. I have to lay in it for the time being and I have to overcome. I trust management and I trust what their decisions are.?

The left-hander has lost his first six starts this season and has a 7.53 ERA that jumped considerably after Zito was tagged for eight earned runs in a 10-1 loss Sunday to Cincinnati.

He used to be able to locate his pitches and was able to change speeds to keep the batters off balance.

How he is continuing to walk batters while his fastball and change up (which is his out pitch) are too close in velocity.

PITTSBURGH -- Barry Zito, demoted to the San Francisco Giants bullpen last week, is returning to the starting rotation without having made any relief appearances.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Zito will start Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh against the Pirates' Phil Dumatrait (0-1). Zito, who a year ago signed a $126 million, seven-year contract, was sent to the bullpen last week after compiling a 7.53 ERA while losing his first six starts.

"Barry Zito's going to start. He's a starter," Bochy said Tuesday. "We just gave him a break."

He constantly gets behind hitters to start the ab. That coupled with his ever diminishing fastball is a recipe for disaster. Throw in Karma and you've got yourself a big, $126 Million turd.

He was pitching like this - shitty - the second half of his last year with the A's. I couldn't believe the Giants threw $126 million at him. Unfortunately for them, he's gotten even worse.
