Gholston Vs. Chris Long

Well the Thomas experiment worked pretty well...I think Chris was a lot more consistent force last year. I think Chris is a safer pick in how he'll translate (if there is such a thing), while Vern has the bigger upside. With Parcells in control I may go for the big splash with Vern, operating under the assumption that Parcells will build a strong team around him like usual.

If I was running an anemic program with frequent personnel mistakes, I'd go with Jr.

Thomas worked but once you get bit by the dog, you're a little nervous around other dogs. Gallery actually played well last year, but it was at guard, which you don't draft with the #2 pick.

Chris Long may be the safest pick in the draft.

Chris Long can completely dominate the game from the defensive end position. Vern was a dominant rush end, but that was it. Chris Long is the only star on the Virginia defense, and was constantly double-teamed. Vern was playing with two other top-10 draft picks on that defense, not to mention Heyward and Washington, who very well could be future first-rounders. And most impressively, Chris Long was putting up ridiculous numbers and dominating offenses as a 3-4 end. Vern did everything as a 4-3 end. 3-4 ends aren't supposed to get sacks or tackles, they are supposed to eat blockers and allow linebackers to get ridiculously high tackle counts (see Dan Connor). But Long still put up 91 tackles and 15 sacks.

Gholston is an incredible player and probably has a higher ceiling. But right now, I don't know how you can pick against Chris Long.

1) This is about Chris Long, not Jake Long. Virginia and D end should've given that away.

2) Most of his domination that day came against Schilling, who is a pretty suspect tackle. One sack vs long does not equate to domination.

3) You really aren't sure why Jake Long would go that high in the draft?

I know. I was using the Michigan game as an example of what Vern has done against one of the best O-lineman in the country. Kiper had Chris Long going #2 over Vern. Chill out

Of course, I'm a Raider fan and am skeptical on drafting any Big 10 lineman in the top 4, after the Robert Gallery experiment.

Dolphins begin talks with Jake Long - Yahoo! News

Dolphins begin talks with Jake Long
By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer

MIAMI - Bill Parcells has made a move in preparation for the draft.
It could be a fake.
Parcells and the Miami Dolphins have begun contract negotiations with the agent for potential top draft pick Jake Long, a person familiar with the talks said Thursday. The person did not want to be identified because the Dolphins have been coy about their plans for the No. 1 pick.
Negotiations with Long's agent, Tom Condon, don't necessarily mean Miami has ruled out other prospects. The new Dolphins regime, led by Parcells, could use the talks to increase contract leverage with other potential picks.
The Dolphins also are interested in trading the No. 1 pick, but so far no suitors have surfaced.
Long, an offensive tackle from Michigan, is one of at least five players considered candidates to be taken with the first pick by the Dolphins. They're also believed to be interested in Virginia defensive end Chris Long, Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston and Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.
Arkansas running back Darren McFadden is considered perhaps the best player available, but the Dolphins have greater needs at other positions.
The Dolphins would be delighted to prevent a holdout by reaching an agreement on a contract with their top pick before the draft begins April 26. Last year's top pick, JaMarcus Russell, missed all of training camp before signing a $61 million contract with the Oakland Raiders.
Offensive line is considered the biggest need for the Dolphins, who went 1-15 last year. But Parcells has been reluctant to use high picks on offensive linemen in the past.
