Gholston Vs. Chris Long

All fanhood aside I honestly think Vernon is the better D end. I admit I only saw one or two Virginia games. Gholston's combine numbers were better, and his upper body strength can't be questioned. I am sure his technique needs work but coming out of college everybody's does.

Just curious who would you take first?

mancrush on vern aside, i noticed that Kiper had Long going #2. i'm not sure why. vern dominated jake long (one of the best OT in the game) from scUM and no one was able to do that this year. plus, like you mentioned above, he kicked ass at the combine.

1) This is about Chris Long, not Jake Long. Virginia and D end should've given that away.

2) Most of his domination that day came against Schilling, who is a pretty suspect tackle. One sack vs long does not equate to domination.

3) You really aren't sure why Jake Long would go that high in the draft?

Not a sack, but still whipped Long on this play. There are others, you just count sacks. As far a Jake Long, I think Abdallah or Heyward blew him about 5 yards back on a play too. Long may have trouble against speed rushers. I think the kid from Fla beat him in the bowl game.

Of course, I'm a Raider fan and am skeptical on drafting any Big 10 lineman in the top 4, after the Robert Gallery experiment.

I think Chris long has years of learning from Howie that gives him his great game. I love Howie and Chris, but given the choice, I'm taking my chance on Vern getting better.

Sorry hit edit instead of quote the first time.

I think he knew that. Just stating that Vern dominated one of the best OT's in the game and should be right up there for the best DE in the draft like Howie Jr. Jr might be a little taller than Vern which is where the bump in draft position comes from. Although ripped and completely dominating Vern always seemed a little short to me. Of course that worked for James Harrison (Steelers) in college as he repeatedly ran over me, just because he was short and powerful.

And there were times Long whipped Gholston in that game, especially against the run... I'd say Jake won that war in cbus.

Heyward did collapse Jake into Henne, after the pass was released. I thought Long did a great job vs Harvey. Here's another who felt the same way. I believe he picked up his sacks against Schilling.

Well the Thomas experiment worked pretty well...

I think Chris was a lot more consistent force last year. I think Chris is a safer pick in how he'll translate (if there is such a thing), while Vern has the bigger upside. With Parcells in control I may go for the big splash with Vern, operating under the assumption that Parcells will build a strong team around him like usual.

If I was running an anemic program with frequent personnel mistakes, I'd go with Jr.

Their "listed" heights are

Gholston- 6' 3"
Long- 6' 4"

It was just my perception without any facts to back it up. I would love to see how they measured at the combine if that is public knowledge. Long might be getting more love because of his dad as well.

Actually they both measured in at 6030, exactly 6'3', according to NFLDC.
