Hey there everyone. Lifelong Buckeye fan (a whole 17 years) here, and it's about that time in my life where I start applying for colleges, I already have most applications done. As you may have guessed, I'm from North New Jersey, right up by New York City. There are a lot more convenient schools I could go to, but nope, none of them are for me. I want to go to The Ohio State University. It's my far and away number one school, and I've already sent in my application and I'm in the process of sending in my transcript from school, as well as my recommendation letters, one of them coming from an OSU alumni who is still on many scholarship boards and other things like that there in Columbus. Now, of course, I'm setting myself up here for complete heartbreak if I don't get accepted, but whatever, I'd like to keep the faith.

I am very close to my grandparents and they are here in New Jersey, so I would ideally like to be able to come visit them whenever I need to.

Now, the problem is, if I were to get in, getting there. The only parent I live with is my mom, who is more than happy to drive me there, which is about an 8-10 hour drive each way for us. But that being said, if there's a way which I wouldn't have to rely on her, then I would like to do that. The best way for me, I would think, is Amtrak Trains. Is anyone here familiar enough with the train system that they might be able to help me out? Penn Station in New York City is a very, very busy station thats right by our house, so any trains going there from Columbus or any other place would be just perfect. Or would I have to take a train from Columbus to Cincinatti or Cleveland or another place, if Columbus doesn't run trains all the way to NYC?

Or, if that doesn't work out, I have 3 major airports within distance of me...Newark NJ, LaGuardia, and JFK...would flying be better?

Overall, I'm just looking for some advice here. Are there any alum on these boards there were a similar distance away and did it all well? Any words of advice?

That's not so bad, actually. If there were an emergency or something time-based, I could just take a plane in that case.

No Amtrak in Columbus. Pittsburgh and Cleveland both have stations though, so taking a bus to one of those and catching a train is also an option.

~$30 for a bus ticket to Pittsburgh and ~$80 for Amtrak from there to NYC. Just for one way and would take 12 hours to do it.

Flights seems to start around $90, so that would seem like the best option.

There's also the terrifying thought of ride-sharing via craigslist or something like that.

Go buy a $1000 honda and drive all through college. This way you can get back and forth when ever you want and have wheels while you're here.

It's probably a better investment for any graduation money you recieve than spending it on beer...Wait what am I talking about thats terrible advice spend it on beer!!

Actually you should just walk here that way you have tons of money for Natty!

their are quite a few northern jersey kids at ohio state. youll likely be able to leach on to one of them to go halfsies on a ride, or something. that being said iindiana is the new wisconsin, i sure to hell hope thats not where ohio state is headed...

How often do you think you will be returning home from school? I only went home for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. You can book all of those early enough in advance and get good airfare rates.

You may think you will go home all the time, but more than likely you will want to stay at school and hang with friends.

I've made the drive from jersey to columbus 2,398,230,948 times... it can be done from princeton in 7 hours flat - and that was in a nissan stanza.

Also done the Newark flight many, many times. Continental runs several EWR-CMH flights, which are still pretty cheap if bought in advance.

I would actually advise against greyhound... It takes about twice as long as driving because you go up through cleveland and then make stops along I-80 It's also just a generally bad experience.

When I was a freshman I took my car. They make you park it about a thousand miles away though. I got rid of it after a few months, because it was pointless. Also whenever I went out there, at least one car I passed on the way to mine had one of its windows busted.
