Getting tired of having to defend my Buckeyes... (email from a Vols fan)

Here's the text of an email I just received from a friend who's a Vols fan:

How does this play in Columbus?
Ohio State hires steroid user as strength coach

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressell has hired Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder Butch Reynolds as a strength & conditioning coach for the Buckeyes football team.

Reynolds, an Ohio State grad, later tested positive for steroid use and was banned from track & field for two years.

Tressel said Reynolds' primary responsibility will be making the Buckeyes faster.
Here's my reply:

I'm not normally one to listen to the conspiracy theorists, but I have to admit it does seem that ESPN has it in for us with the giant bold headline:

Ex-world record holder tested postive for 'roids in '90

I was surprised to see that the article was actually about a hiring, not a 'roids case. By the way, did you notice they misspelled "positive"? That seems fitting to me. "Positive" isn't in ESPNs vocabulary... literally!

Butch set another world record in 1993 and you'd have to imagine the IAAF was looking at him pretty closely at that time since he had just won a $27 million lawsuit against them. (It was overturned in '94)

I would assume from this that his steroid use (if he ever did use) is behind him and he ran clean at the very least after 1990, so I'm OK with it. Even if guilty, he might be cleaner than a guy that never got caught. Kind of like people who have recently declared bankruptcy are good risks for a loan.

So in short... I'm cool with it, but I hate that it gives ESPN more ammo. They seem to like the Vols too. Check out the last line in this http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2081283

"They are among the 11 Tennessee players who have been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking since February 2004. Six have remained at the school, while the other five left because they either graduated, transferred or were kicked off the team."

Good to know they're counting isn't it?
Anyone else getting emails like this? I'm used to it from my Michigan and Miami fan friends, but now I'm getting crap from SEC schools! Tennessee of all places!

I like how "graduated, transferred or were kicked off the team" is put together as if each of those endings are similar.

I though last summer a Michigan football player testified in congress on steriod use!

Tell the Michigan fag boys that they should worry less about Ohio State and more about keeping their women happy! Let them ponder that one!

Against my better judgment, I clicked on the ESPiN link. After waiting about 40 seconds for the damn thing to load I said fuck it. Nice to see their website is still a POS.

The headline, obviously, is designed to get a rise - sensationalist "journalism", ESPiN style. Tell your UT dipshit "Yeah, we brought him in to make sure our boys are injecting properly. Happy now?"

Then remind him he has plenty of his own concerns with Fatass Phil Fullmer and leave it at that. Save the "defending" for when we actually do something. There's nothing here...

I've found, the best defense in that circumstance, is no defense at all.

Just a nod of the head, a smile, a 'looks like you've got it figured out'.
Let em think whatever the hell they want. I make it a habit to try and not argue with people whose opinions I could care less about. Two quotes that come to mind :

"Never underestimate the power of the human mind to believe what it wants to believe, no matter the conflicting evidence."

and

"Never explain. Your friends don't need it and your enemies won't believe you anyways."

Go Bucks!

I think the big problem here is that some of you HAVE "Friends" that are Michigan, Miami or Vols fans...

Christ...

I mean its one thing to be cordial... but... "Friends."

Have a nice day, Jane Fondas...

Damned sympathizers...

I suppose you guys thought the "Commies had an Interesting Idea" back in the 50's.

:wink2:

I work with some of the worlds biggest UT fans and I have to say they are usually pretty good at keeping their mouth shut on stuff like this.

In fact they offerd support more often than not during the whole Mo C thing because they had been put through ESPN's inquisition previously and knew exactly what we were going through.

I know there is still bad blood from the 95 Citrus Bowl but of all the SEC fans down here (and I've dealt with them all) UT fans aren't that bad as a whole, LSU and Auburn groups are usually pretty cool. Don't even get me fucking started on the 3 florida schools and UGA.
