Georgia Tech +6.5 vs tOSU (ov/un 133.5) Sun 2:20 ET, CBS

That last block by Lauderdale was worth watching.

Wisky got blown out by a team playing their own game at them. They were clearly frustrated halfway through the first half. Live by the sword...

i think the game rests on three things:

1. lauderdale's minutes. he must not get two early fouls. he must play at least 30 minutes. furthermore, when he is out, the team must not give up too much ground. even uscb capitalized on madsen's presence.

2. outside shooting. diebler, buford, and lighty need to hit at least or about 40% from three-point range.

3. turner's mid-range game. lawal and favors present a substantial hindrance to turner getting all the way to the bucket. turner's mid-range jumper must be on, and he must recognize when a kickout/dump-off is the play rather than pressing the drive through too much traffic.
well, items 1 and 2 were satisfied.

lauderdale played 31 minutes today, and each minute was crucial. i don't know what madsen's +/- numbers were, but i'm certain that they were not good at all. dallas did an exceptional job not putting himself in foul trouble. i think he got his second foul well into the second half. had he gotten two or three early fouls, the outcome might have been different.

diebler, buford, and lighty shot a combined 7/17 from three-point range for 41%. their first half performance was woeful. diebler and buford were virtually a non-factor for the first 20 minutes on the offensive side of the court. fortunately, diebler sprouted wings in the second half and completed 4 of his 6 daggers. he easily could have had 4 or more open attempts. buford, lighty, and especially turner should have done a much better job looking for him. when diebler is hot, you need to feed the beast.

turner's mid-range was nowhere. however, i was wrong that it needed to be a primary factor. with lawal and favors in early foul trouble, turner's game needed to be at the rim. once turner prevailed the initial wave of defenders, he was a near certainty to score or to create a good scoring opportunity. much to his and the team's detriment, though, turner attempted to force his way through too many double- and triple-teams. as a result, turner tallied 9 turnovers. a team will not win 6 consecutive games with such carelessness from its leader.

You pointed it out here and I thought that this last game as well. Turner and company just seem too careless with the ball at times. They go through stretches where they look very aggressive and smooth, but then they go through equal stretches where they just look nonchalant with the ball and turn it over. To be fair, both of these tourney games have seen Turner getting mugged on the dribble, but still, the whole team needs to really buckle down and take care of the ball if they hope to stay alive.

But to win this game and play as poorly as they played is a definite bonus. Hopefully this next game will find the whole team firing on all cylinders.

Let's go Bucks! :osu:

Observations from Section 411 Row N

Ok, finally back home and made it most of the way through the thread. Here's my thoughts.

1) I really do like the town of Milwaukee. Easy to get around, parking is all over the place...

2) We decided to go up to the game this morning on a whim... the wife and I kicked around the idea over coffee and next think I knew, we were blowing off church and on the way up... Props to the wife on that.

3) Paid $4.00 over face... nice.

4) The game... Everything has pretty much been toched on earlier:

The start of the game was really hard to watch. It was kind of frustrating seeing them play like that all the while thinking of what a problem GT could be as far as a match up for us.

A couple of turning points in my mind were when Diebs went to the line and drained his shots. I thought to myself that was good for him to get into it during the game and it might translate into getting a bit more loose during the game. I think it did.

The refs were shoddy to say the least. At one point I said outloud, "well, I guess they are letting them play" and then in the same breath finished my sentance with "at the other end of the court." A lot of non-calls that could have been called... a lot of calls that shouldn't have been called. I'd say that goes both ways. Shoddy... poorly called game.

ET is crazy good. He's just so much fun to watch. I don't know that I've ever seen a player take over a game without making you feel like he's taken over the game. Does that make sense? He just seems to have the ability to put a game on his back without drawing all the attention to himself.

It was a physical game for sure... or at least in one direction. I thought that GT should really be ashamed of how they played today. It was poor form in any sport to play the way they did. I saw the replay of "the tackle" and for as bad as it looked on TV, it was worse live.

The good guys won! Came back to Chicagoland and had BW3s.

My two boys got to go see their first college basketball game... and it's cool that they got to see a tourney game and a Bucks' win at the same time. Good day!

Ok, as an aside. I've decided that I'm done rooting for anything that comes from the state of WI anymore. I was sitting around a bunch of Bitchy the Badgers... openly rooting aginst tOSU while I was sitting there rooting for our B10+1 brothers. It wasn't like it was one or two of them. It was multiple groups of them doing the same. Fuck 'em. If they all can't root for their conference... then they don't deserve for me to root for them either. Fuck them and I'm glad that the Big Red put one right up their puckered asses today. Fuck Bucky.

Go Bucks. :oh:

We gotta play better next week and I think we will. Today was certainly a better game than against UCSB though.

I'm not too worried about it with a guy like Turner here. We match up with Tennessee pretty well, imo.

You hate what you can't beat. I've had the same reaction from fans of every other school in the Big10. They blame OSU for the stigma of the Big10 sucking.:io:

Not saying there's a correlaton, but it took to the 3rd game before Ohio State began to dominate in the Big10 Tourney.....just saying.

I wanted to echo the sentiments above about Milwaukee being a great host town - lots of bars and restaurants downtown, inexpensive, no traffic, and fast seating in the arena, no matter how high up you were.

I agree with a lot of the analyses above, but have to say that the play of David Lighty was the cornerstone performance upon which all others rested. Lighty's game against Georgia Tech was one of the most efficient, best efforts by an individual that I have seen in college basketball all year. I had previously thought that Lighty played the defensive game of his life against Ralph Sampson III in the Big Ten tourney, but what he did against Derrick Favors was even more impressive. Favors is a top 5 pick in this year's draft should he declare. Favors did not score until several minutes into the second half, and most of his points came when Lighty and Lauderdale were both on the bench. Lighty's offense was equally impressive - 18 points on 8 shots, and he hit his 3-point shots at times during the game when the rest of the team was stone COLD. He was also the least sloppy ball-handler for the Buckeyes, by far. Oh, and there was that game-sealing moment when he stepped up and nailed the free throws after being body-slammed.

I noticed that all of the national articles regarding the game were about Evan Turner, and I only saw Lighty's performance recognized in the press with a Matta quote saying that Lighty was the game MVP, and a local piece by Bob Hunter. It makes me wonder whether the rest of the press was actually at the game.

A few other observations:

  • Diebler scored 3-point plays in 3 different ways: 3 free throws, a lay up and a free throw, and shooting several from behind the 3-point line
  • All weekend, teams shot better, both in shoot-arounds and during the game, on the rim that we had in the second half. That's why I knew Ohio State would win after throwing our worst at them and still leading at halftime.
  • Turner had a better shooting day and rebounded and passed very well, but was sloppier than the stats even show. He was credited with 9 turnovers, but he got tied up a couple more times causing us to lose the possession arrow, didn't catch passes that he should have (resulting in turnovers going to teammates on the stat sheet), and gave up on defense after the ball was turned over in favor of pleading with refs or laying on the floor. When Ga Tech made their surge late in the game, a turnover by Evan started up 3 consecutive 3-point plays for them.
  • Now for the flip-side. The fact that Ga Tech was double- and triple-teaming Turner directly led to Diebler not being guarded in the second half. The neutral fans in the stands were equally shocked by their choice not to guard Diebler. It cannot be understated how valuable Turner is with the amount of attention from opposing defenses he attracts.
  • Evan had a much better game offensively than the all-american shooting guard for Oklahoma State, who was effectively shut down by Ga Tech two days earlier.
  • If Evan reduces his mistakes, I'm not going to say how far we are going to go for fear of jinxing it.
  • Dallas Lauderdale is beardly. Huge difference when he is in the game, whether or not the stats show it.
  • Buford was quiet during this game, but had a steady performance, and once again got better as the course of the game went on.
  • Buford and Diebler swished just about every shot in warm-ups, and Lighty bricked all of his, which did not translate over into the game.
  • Ga Tech looked like an awful outside shooting team during both shoot-arounds on Friday and Sunday, and during the games.
