Baseball: Ohio State plays three-game home series against Georgetown

The Ohio State baseball team is like an employee taking inventory on this six-game winning streak. It has checked all the boxes.

Everything has seemed to go right for the team. During the stretch, the Buckeyes have a 3.17 team ERA while averaging 7.17 runs per game. The stretch has included a win against Coastal Carolina, which has been ranked at times this season, and a sweep of a strong North Carolina-Wilmington team.

“Gives us confidence going into every weekend, knowing that everything is working for us,” junior pitcher Connor Curlis said.
Now the Buckeyes (14-6) will look to keep the momentum alive this weekend when they face the Georgetown Hoyas (5-14) Friday in a three-game series at Bill Davis Stadium.

Ohio State’s offense features five hitters batting above .300, and produced at least seven runs in five of the six victories on the recent tear. The Buckeyes’ lineup could continue to stay hot against the Hoyas, a team that has struggled to keep opponents off the scoreboard, combining for a 6.36 team ERA.

Georgetown’s starting rotation features only one player with an ERA below 6.14. That’s sophomore and Friday night starter Brent Killam, who threw seven innings of one-run baseball against Princeton his last time on the mound. The Hoyas’ bullpen only contains two pitchers with more than two innings of work to that list.

Curlis, fresh off a 6.1-inning, one-earned-run performance against California State University, Northridge, takes the hill first for the Buckeyes against a Hoya offense that has hit only four home runs this season. What it lacks in power it makes up for in speed.

“They’re going to run the bases,” head coach Greg Beals said. “They’ve got some stolen bases on their mark.”

Twenty-six stolen bases on their mark to be precise, and in just 28 attempts. That 93 percent mark ranks first in the nation.

At the plate, Georgetown’s offense is headlined by freshman phenom Eddie McCabe, who bats .356 and leads the team in RBI with 15 — no other Hoya has more than nine. Senior left fielder Austin Shirley leads off the lineup as the team’s top base stealer, and gives himself plenty of opportunity to commit baserunning thievery with a .410 OBP. Shirley has seven steals through his 19 games played.

Junior Ryan Feltner, 2-0 with a 6.26 ERA, will start the second game of the series for Ohio State while redshirt senior Adam Niemeyer gets the nod for Game 3.

  • The 2018 Buckeyes return 22 letterwinners this season, including 13 members from the 2016 Big Ten championship team. The team welcomed 10 newcomers in the fall.
  • The Scarlet and Gray racked up the frequent flyer miles, opening the 2018 season with 17-straight road games. The Buckeyes were in state of Florida two times and also visited Arizona, South Carolina and North Carolina. The team flew a combine 7,516 miles across the country over the last five weeks.

QUOTABLES

Greg Beals, head coach

On team's recent success
"The feeling is what I've been saying, I think we are close. I wouldn't call it clicking on all cylinder by any means. We won all three games last week, but I think are 3 and 5-hole hitters had a combined one hit between the two of them. There's room for our offense to grow and certainly room for our defense to grow. Our infield defense needs to continue to take strides and get better."

Connor Curlis, junior left-handed pitcher
On spring break trip and first home series
"It was great to concentrate on baseball all week and play a bunch of different teams. To come away with a 4-2 isn't bad, but I feel like we could have done better. It's always awesome to come home to Bill Davis Stadium and play in front of the fans and just get to get that series sweep is good and it built some momentum heading into Georgetown."

Noah McGowan, senior utility
On overall feel in the dugout
"It feels good. We have a lot of confidence in our offense to score runs and it's a good feeling for our pitchers to have too. If they give up a couple runs, we know that we have guys in the dugout that can come back quickly at the plate."

I was hoping at least one of these games would get canceled. This series is already gonna ding our RPI even with a sweep, but a home loss to G’town would be a killer. Don’t like that they are throwing at least two lefty starters either. The way we’ve struggled against LHP over the years, I feel like these games might be a bit more competitive than we’d like...especially if those lefties can throw strikes. Might hafta get to their bullpen before we can get it going. Oh well, hopefully they aren’t big scaredy cats like me and go out there focused and take care of business.

And the team that lost to EMU showed up today. Down 5-1 bott 9....ugh

Edit = lost 5-1....BAD LOSS

In terms of RPI, Might be the worst loss in college baseball this year. Top RPI 30 teams don’t lose at home to teams with a RPI of 290.

Unfortunately I was there to see it...reminded of that Northern Kentucky game a few years ago. NKU was like 2-20 and dominated for 7 innings with a LHP with an ERA over 20.00. Hitting lefties that get ahead in the count has been a nightmare for this team for as long as I can remember. I was hoping they’d get to their righty closer. He was pretty wild but got outs.

Four more unearned runs and the fifth scored on a WP. Pouhl had about as bad a game as you can imagine..he got a hit but otherwise stranded a ton of guys, committed 3 errors and GIDP. Throw in 13ks and you’ve got one of the worst performances I’ve witnessed at BDS. Good news is Georgetown hasn’t got much pitching left...they burned their closer and far and away their best SP. Of course, all it takes is a halfway decent lefty and we’ll have ourselves another struggle tomorrow. Shake it off boys...go get em tomorrow
