Gene Chizik (Former Auburn HC)

Imagine what an Iowa folk hero he would be if he did turn the Cyclones into a power.....
I don't think Iowa is big enough for two folk heroes, after all they've already got Kirk Ferentz, who is teh bestest coach evar!!!11!11!

I'm on the verge of vomiting just from the thought of the media love-fest when The Best Coach in the Country (tm), Ferentz, faces off against The Greatest Defensive Coordinator of All Times (tm), Chizik, for the prized CyHawk Trophy (what the fuck is a CyHawk, anyway?) and the right to be the fawning love-child of Trev Alberts for one entire calendar year.

Just think of the recruiting battles! I mean, the choices for a young high school athlete, and the glorious possibilities and opportunities of living the next five years of your life in Iowa City or Ames. Damn. That's a tough choice!

Inside the head of a recruit:

Hmm ... which one should I attend? Both offer me the opportunity to go 7-5, take 4th place in my conference and go to the Alamo Bowl!

I think all it would take would be one or two 8-4 seasons for Chizik to move elsewhere.

Does anyone know if he has any ties to Iowa?

If he does it has to be a Kevin Bacon by degrees connection.
His professional and academic history by state is FL, SC, TN, TX

Is this the same Gene Chizik that won 29 games in a row before a certain game in early September?

:wink2: That'd be the one.

I think its a great opportunity for Gene Chizik to prove he can win at a perpetual loser. I'm shocked that the Miami gig or the Alabama gig didn't appeal to him.

His name will bring in recruits now that he has a follwoing in the Big XII. ISU hasn't had a game breaking player since Seneca Wallace.

It will be interesting to see who Chizik looks to to fill out his staff. There are some bright young minds in football right now that would love to land a gig on Chizik's coaching staff.

Chizik In At Auburn

Well, a 5-19 record is sure to please Auburn fans...

Reports: Chizik hired at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn has reportedly hired Iowa State's Gene Chizik as its new football coach.
The Birmingham News, Mobile Press-Register and Rivals.com reported Saturday that the former Auburn defensive coordinator will succeed Tommy Tuberville, who resigned following 10 seasons.
An Auburn spokesman said no announcement was scheduled for Saturday and an Iowa State spokesman also said he couldn't confirm the reports.
Chizik is 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State after stints running the defenses at Auburn and Texas. He coached the nation's top scoring defense in his third and final season with the Tigers.
That 2004 defense allowed just 11 points a game and Auburn went undefeated.

Gene Chizik will be hired at Auburn. - NCAA Football - Bowls - 2008 - SI.com

I still remember the verbal handjob he was getting during the '06 tOSU-Texas clash...

Surprisingly, Tigger fans are less than enthused by the hire...

not saying I agree with the hire, but I can see where they're coming from. Chizik was a very hot name, after putting together great defense after great defense, but has struggled at Iowa State since taking that job.

I'd imagine most coaches would struggle at Iowa State. Chizik was Muschamp before Muschamp. Muschamp would be what Chizik is today if that was Muschamp who took the Iowa State gig.

Has Chizik proven he isn't a good head coach, or did he just make a horrible decesion in making his first head coaching job Iowa State?

I don't know, McCarney had ISU somehat competitive for much of the decade before they canned his ass. By competitive, I mean he took them to five bowls in seven years...no small accomplishment there. Since Chizik took over, the recruiting has really dried up and they've gotten progressively worse...2-10 this year without playing TTU, Texas or OU. Not a good hire at all IMHO, they should've went after Gill at Buffalo.

Tide fans have to be as giddy as we where when scUM hired DickRod.

I agree they should have hired Turner Gill. I think he could have impressed a lot of mothers and fathers in that hotbed of talent.

It wasn't long ago Chizik had Auburn playing the best defense in their history, which is why I can understand their line of thinking.

That's true, but he kinda fell flat on his face in his first go-round as a head coach. Plus, from reading their board, there seems to be some lingering animosity towards him for leaving them to go to Texas...

still though what exactly has he done at Iowa State? Iowa State shouldn't be terrible but under chizik they have been. You'd figure atleast for his reputation he would've had some very good recruiting classes etc for Iowa State but that never happened. I don't like the hire just simply because he hasn't proved anything what so ever as a head coach.

This is a bit of a head scratcher. In the the SEC especially, a HC needs to be a proven stud recruiter, especially competing w/ Bama,Florida, LSU and Georgia head to head for your prospects. I think a lot of candidates are leary about jumping into the ring to go head to head w/ Bama, and Chizik was willing to take the job-an admitted upgrade from Iowa State.
I am shocked that Turner Gill has not gotten a new gig, even Locksley has gotten in at New Mexico.
