Every Saturday before kickoff, tBBC staff corals all the reading material you need to get ready for the game. From our workings throughout the week to the internet and beyond — here are the articles and media you need to get caught up on as you enjoy your week 1 tailgate. Let’s get things started by firing up this week’s Gameday Morning playlist, compiled by tBBC staff.

For the first time in school history, the Buckeyes will travel to the birthplace of college football to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Urban Meyer will be looking for win number 150 in his career as the Buckeyes try to make it 27 straight inside the Big Ten Conference.

How do you know your program has championship resolve in the middle of the year? When your head ball coach is 25-0 in the month of October and November during his tenure.

For Rutgers, this game is more about selling the program than it is winning a football game. One of the newcomers to the conference has made tremendous strides over the last year and a half and will have a chance to show off it’s program while hosting Ohio State in prime time.

They’ll be looking to defeat the odds, while hosting a #1 team for the first time since 2002, when the Miami Hurricanes came to town.

Overcoming the odds isn’t something that’s new to this team though.

Rutgers hung with Michigan State two weeks ago, despite not having their head coach on the sideline and a boneheaded mistake to end the game on fourth down. Last week, they became the first team in the 122 tries to beat an opponent when down 25 points or more — storming back against Indiana and winning on a late field goal.

On Gameday Morning, we hope to bring you that energy.

I might be down after a Friday night went wrong at the local watering hole, but I’ve got my chili brewing, coffee in the pot, and a migraine full of information to get you ready for tonight’s kickoff.

Let’s Get it.

We already know the change at quarterback. J.T. Barrett will get the start and from the way Urban Meyer has spoken about the opportunity this week, it’s his job fully. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s the case on Saturday — especially since Indiana tore up the Rutgers defense with a similar offense that Cardale Jones couldn’t perfect as the number one guy.

Other changes on offense include Johnnie Dixon returning at receiver, behind starter Jalin Marshall. Braxton Miller is listed as the top H-Back, with Dontre Wilson penciled in at #2, despite the nagging foot injury that has bothered him his whole career.

On defense, Joel Hale and Michael Hill will split reps at defensive tackle, with Tommy Schutt out after having surgery on his wrist. Freshman Robert Landers will back those two up.

Joshua Perry is probable to start at weakside linebacker, but is still listed as the number one guy on the depth chart this week. Dante Booker could see some time if Perry seems a step behind.

A couple new faces have also made their way to the two-deep this week. Walk-on Jarrod Barnes will back up Vonn Bell on Saturday.

Linebacker Joe Burger will back up Raekwon McMillan at middle linebacker.

Running Back Mike Weber, who has been battling a knee injury all season, is back to full speed according to Urban Meyer. The coaching staff now has to make the decision on whether or not it is worth burning his redshirt at this point of the season.

— Ari Wasserman at Cleveland.com took a closer look at what Rutgers would look like if they recruited New Jersey as well as they should.

Rutgers, just like Ohio State, is the only big state school that’s conveniently located in a talent-rich high school football state.

It’s an advantage not many programs have, and that built-in recruiting edge for Ohio State — owning Ohio — plays a major factor in the Buckeyes competing for national titles every year.

Rutgers has that, so you’d assume that the Scarlet Knights, who are now finally starting to feel like a real member of the Big Ten, would be in a similar situation. Keep good talent home, compete at the highest level. Simple.

But Rutgers doesn’t keep top talent home. And that’s why it only has one Big Ten win right now, and why, at least for the foreseeable future, it won’t be a realistic contender for anything. At best, at the rate in which it attracts New Jersey talent right now, Rutgers can hope to muddle in the middle of the Big Ten standings.

— Dennis Dodd at CBS Sports says that this isn’t the first time a No. 1 team made a change at quarterback.

As this situation plays out, Barrett and Jones have to understand that egos have to be set aside. No matter who starts, there is an accomplished star behind him. Looking over their shoulders? Good. There’s a great chance the guy on the bench could be better for any given game — in any given series.

“This one, I think, everyone thought as a possibility because of the two talented quarterbacks and the pressure on this team,” said Gainesville Sun columnist Pat Dooley, who covered Meyer at Florida, in an email.

“Meyer told me a couple of weeks ago that, ‘it feels like 2009′ when winning never seemed to be enough.”

— Taylor Decker talked with Dayton Daily News‘ David Jablonski about the OSU offense and how the offensive line played their best game against Penn State.

Penn State allowed 79 rushing yards in its previous game against Indiana. It allows 3.6 yards per carry on the season. Ohio State averaged 6.3. The line played a big part in that.

“I think that was a good test for us across the board,” Decker said. “They had good players on their defense. It was a challenge we were ready for as a whole unit. Having that challenge and that high level of competition made us play better. That was a fun game. It was a good gauge for us. Are we improving? Can we play at that level? I think we answered both questions.”

— ESPN’s Austin Ward says Braxton Miller might have a pass or two up his sleeves. Clair and I predicted it will happen today on Script Ohio.

“Playing this position, you’ve got to be patient,” Miller said last week. “Half the time, you’re not even touching the ball for the first half or the first quarter or whatever. But coach Meyer is going to get the ball in the playmakers’ hands, so you’ve just got to be patient.

“Yeah, I can [throw]. But it’s up to coach Meyer and the play call.”

— Kevin Stankiewicz at The Lantern scouts the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers’ defense as a whole dwells near the bottom of the national rankings, at 105th, but the main reason for its location there lies in the defensive backfield.

The run defense sits 30th in the country — 30 spots ahead of OSU — but the secondary is surrendering 321 yards per game, which places them third from last, at 124th. Twice opponents have accumulated over 450 yards through the air.

These woes don’t appear to be letting up anytime soon, especially against the Buckeyes.

— Eric Seger at 11W writes about “The Next Step” in Ohio State’s offense.

Meyer’s done this before — it’s the time of the season where teams begin to separate themselves from one another. Good becomes great. Great becomes excellent. What Meyer wants, though, is even higher.

“It’s typical, eighth game into the season, some teams take off and players take off and others don’t,” Meyer said. “The ones that do, the teams and the players that do, become exceptional. Right now, we’re very good, but the next few weeks have to be exceptional.”
Rutgers Two Deep

Big time weapon Leonte Carroo is listed as questionable but head coach Kyle Flood has his top receiver listed as a starter on Saturday.

The Scarlet Knights will present a four-headed monster at running back. Paul James, Josh Hicks, Justin Goodwin and Robert Martin have all received an equal amount of carries.

James presents the best big play threat but all bring great running vision to the table.

The Scarlet Knight secondary has struggled, mostly because they are very young.

Three of the starting four defensive backs are freshman.

Griffin Whitmer at On The Banks handed out his midseason report card this week.

Quarterback | B

Chris Laviano has had his moments this year, and he has had his moments. In the past two games, he has thrown for a combined for 596 yards, 6 TDs, and only 1 interception. Both games were played against B1G competition as well. He has improved in just about every game this year and should look to build on that as the season progresses.

If Leonte Carroo can’t go for Rutgers, Matt Sugam of the Associated Press believes the Scarlet Knights have a weapon dangerous enough to replace him.

Rutgers offensive coordinator Ben McDaniels had a simple question for Carlton Agudosi: Are you ready?

Agudosi was and he hopes to be Saturday — if needed when the Scarlet Knights face No. 1 Ohio State.

“I think the coaches knew I was going to be ready to step up if need be,” Agudosi said. “I think they have confidence in me and knew I was going to come through for them.”

He did.

Carroo scored with 2:06 left in the third quarter to start Rutgers’ rally as the Scarlet Knights scored 28 unanswered points to beat Indiana 55-52. But with the star receiver in street clothes and a walking boot for the remainder of the game, it was Agudosi who helped spearhead Rutgers’ comeback.

Agudosi had three catches for 72 yards in Carroo’s absence, including a 40-yard grab to set up a 3-yard Robert Martin touchdown early in the fourth quarter. On the final drive, he caught a pair of third-down passes for 16 yards to help set up the game-winning field goal.

— NJ.com’s Dan Duggan breaks down the growth of sophomore quarterback Chris Laviano even further.

Coming off the best performance of his young career, it’s easy to see that Rutgers‘ first-year starting quarterback Chris Laviano has improved.

But Rutgers coach Kyle Flood said the coaching staff measures Laviano’s progress beyond the box score.

“He’s been getting better every week,” Flood said Wednesday night on his weekly radio show. “Sometimes when you’re not watching the practices or you’re not watching the coaches’ tape, I don’t know that everybody sees that all the time. But as a coaching staff, we felt that way. We feel like he has a very good command right now of what we want to do, of how we need to set our protections, of how we want to get the checks called within a game, and ultimately delivering the ball, which is the first priority — you’ve got to be able to deliver the ball to play the position. But he’s getting better every week.”

— Ryan Dunleavy of the Asbury Park Press shared the story of cornerback Ronnie James, who chose Rutgers over Ohio State.

People tell me that I’m crazy for not going there,” said James, who didn’t even visit Columbus, Ohio, “but it was all about how I feel about the college.

“I feel like Rutgers was the right place because it is so family oriented. I had a better connection with all the coaches here.”

One of the reasons James feels comfortable at Rutgers is that his older brother, Paul, is the team’s redshirt senior starting halfback and co-captain.

“I let him make his own decision,” Paul James said. “If he ever needed advice I gave it to him, but I didn’t want to pressure him into anything. He was like, ‘Ohio State is nice, it’s a big name and everybody loves it, but I want to play for my home state and in front of my family.’”
One Final Thought

Among WRs we've charted, Ohio State's Michael Thomas has the most receptions without a drop this season

— CFB Film Room (@CFBFilmRoom) October 22, 2015

There have been many angles in which people have attacked the Ohio State offense, but one that should be left alone is the fact that this team doesn’t have a go-to wide receiver. Michael Thomas reminds me a lot of Golden Tate, because of his ability to catch anything thrown to him.

The issue with getting the ball down the field in the passing game has a lot to do with a lack of communication throughout the season. One thing we have seen though is that J.T. Barrett has built great chemistry with Ohio State’s lead receiver.
