On a team with more heralded playmakers and flashier running backs, Antonio Pittman, Ohio State?s forgotten 1,000-yard rusher, reminded everyone he?s in the backfield, too.
After 2 1/2 games of solid but unspectacular play, Pittman exploded in the second half for 103 of his game-high 155 yards, scored a touchdown and pushed the Buckeyes to Saturday?s 37-7 win over Cincinnati at Ohio Stadium.
?We know that somewhere along the season we are going to have to grind it out,? Pittman said. ?Once we start grinding it out, it will open up the pass. The first couple games, the pass opened up the run.?
The Buckeyes led 13-7 early in the third quarter when Pittman made his mark. He carried the ball on four straight plays, three of them off of option pitches from quarterback Troy Smith. The Akron Buchtel grad picked up 38 yards on the drive.Pittman found the end zone early in the fourth. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder took a draw play and kicked it outside to the left sideline where he outran the defense for a 48-yard touchdown bolt to put the Buckeyes up 27-7 with 11:38 left.
?T.J. had a great pull, and I just did a fast bounce,? Pittman said of the touchdown run. ?(Ginn) made a great block, and it was off to the races. I was trying not to be caught.?
Pittman finished with 155 yards on 16 carries. The total was the third-highest of his career.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said increasing the use of the option was an adjustment the coaching staff made at halftime. The Bearcats were blitzing up the middle, and the option put Pittman on the outside with 1-on-1 opportunities.
Usually, Smith keeps the ball on the option, but he said nobody should be surprised with what Pittman did.
?I think I?ve been telling you all along the spark that Antonio provides for the offense,? Smith said. ?It?s all kind of unsung heroes within any football team. Too often a time, you get a couple guys that get all the ink and the people that are really doing the grinding day in and day out at practice or games don?t get enough.?
n THE OTHER WELLS SCORES: Freshman Chris Wells had only five carries for 18 yards, and it was sophomore Maurice Wells who reached the end zone in the fourth quarter.
The trio of running backs helped the Buckeyes to 166 rushing yards. The Buckeyes have not reached their team goal of 200 per game yet, but the total was impressive considering they ran for only two yards in the first quarter.
Maurice Wells powered through two tacklers at the goal line to finish a 9-yard TD run. It was the first rushing touchdown of his career.
