Game Thread Game Three: #1 Ohio State 37, Cincinnati 7 (9/16/06)

Some new wrinkles added today, like the statue of liberty play that was busted up. Also I saw a lot of Ray Small in the shot-ginn which I thought was awesome. We got Ginn split way out, and Small in the slot - lots of potential for big plays. I guess we could call it the "Ray-Gun" from now on.

"Ray-Gun" or "Ray-Ginn"?

Teams concentrating on shutting down Ginn

9/16/2006, 5:39 p.m. PT The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? What's brewing today with the 2006 Ohio State Buckeyes ...
BUCKEYE BUZZ:@ Ted Ginn Jr. had two touchdown catches on Troy Smith passes in Saturday's 37-7 win over Cincinnati. By and large, however, he was almost invisible, with no measurable punt returns and only 33 yards on his five catches.
"Coach (Mark Dantonio) told us to get our hands on him and slow him down," Bearcats CB Mike Mickens said. "You have to focus on him every play. If not, he'll get you."Dantonio, UC's head coach, used to be the defensive coordinator at Ohio State. His philosophy was to shut down Ginn and take his chances against every other Buckeye.
As it turned out, TB Antonio Pittman rushed for 155 yards including a 48-yard touchdown, Smith completed 21-of-30 passes for 203 yards and the defense was superlative.
If the double coverage and all the attention bother Ginn, he didn't let on.
"A championship team makes adjustments," Ginn said.
QUOTABLE:@ Pittman on starting Big Ten play on Saturday against Penn State: "It's going to be big. It's a battle every week. Our house, their house ? it'll be a true battle because we all want that league championship."
QUOTABLE II:@ Smith on what sets Big Ten football apart: "I think Big Ten football is the best in the nation. You get all sorts of weather. You get cold, you get hot, you get rain. It's crazy fans. The love for the game in the Big Ten is unparalleled across the nation."
NOTABLE:@ Ohio State has a winning record against every current conference member except Michigan (39-57-6) and Penn State (10-11).

Bearcats can't hang in

COLUMBUS -- Jared Martin will remember his first collegiate catch forever. But the former Clyde High School star said memories of the play will be mixed.
Martin caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dustin Grutza to give the Bearcats a 7-3 lead against the nation's top-ranked team in Ohio Stadium.
"It was definitely exciting," Martin said of the play, in which he popped open late as Grutza was rolling to his right. "Although the outcome of the game was kind of a bittersweet thing.
"But we all wanted to win the game, and we all believed we were in the game. Like Brent (Celek) said, we had too many missed opportunities. It's great to score a touchdown but it's better to have a victory."
Grutza said while Martin was one of his primary receivers on the touchdown pass, running was still an option.
"I had to scramble pretty quick on that one," Grutza said. "Coach always tells me always keep my eyes downfield. If (Martin) wouldn't have popped open I would have probably taken off on my feet again."
Martin's touchdown was one of the few bright offensive plays for the Bearcats.
Grutza also had a 23-yard run, the longest of his career. But the sophomore said the Ohio State defense had him moving all day.
"Their defensive line was good," Grutza said. "They have good athletes. If there was a person on me, that is when you saw me scrambling and using my feet. They had me trapped in there."
Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio said his team was in the game despite its inconsistent offensive effort.
"We faded a little bit in the fourth quarter and that's what bothers you," Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio said. "We will re-evaluate, refocus and move forward."
Dantonio added that playing in an environment like Ohio Stadium could help his team improve.
"I think as a football team you grow every game regardless of who you play," Dantonio said. "You either get better or get worse, nothing ever stays the same. I hope that our players can take away some confidence here.
"I hope our players can understand that we'll have a chance to win; we'll have our opportunities. I know what the score was and all this kind of stuff, we had our opportunities ... When you're playing a team of this caliber, you have to take advantage of every single opportunity. You can't have negative yardage plays, you can't turn the ball over. We played extremely hard here but got wore down at the end."

Pittman enjoys breakout day

On a team with more heralded playmakers and flashier running backs, Antonio Pittman, Ohio State?s forgotten 1,000-yard rusher, reminded everyone Saturday he?s in the backfield, too. COLUMBUS ? On a team with more heralded playmakers and flashier running backs, Antonio Pittman, Ohio State?s forgotten 1,000-yard rusher, reminded everyone he?s in the backfield, too.
After 2 1/2 games of solid but unspectacular play, Pittman exploded in the second half for 103 of his game-high 155 yards, scored a touchdown and pushed the Buckeyes to Saturday?s 37-7 win over Cincinnati at Ohio Stadium.
?We know that somewhere along the season we are going to have to grind it out,? Pittman said. ?Once we start grinding it out, it will open up the pass. The first couple games, the pass opened up the run.?
The Buckeyes led 13-7 early in the third quarter when Pittman made his mark. He carried the ball on four straight plays, three of them off of option pitches from quarterback Troy Smith. The Akron Buchtel grad picked up 38 yards on the drive.Pittman found the end zone early in the fourth. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder took a draw play and kicked it outside to the left sideline where he outran the defense for a 48-yard touchdown bolt to put the Buckeyes up 27-7 with 11:38 left.
?T.J. had a great pull, and I just did a fast bounce,? Pittman said of the touchdown run. ?(Ginn) made a great block, and it was off to the races. I was trying not to be caught.?
Pittman finished with 155 yards on 16 carries. The total was the third-highest of his career.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said increasing the use of the option was an adjustment the coaching staff made at halftime. The Bearcats were blitzing up the middle, and the option put Pittman on the outside with 1-on-1 opportunities.
Usually, Smith keeps the ball on the option, but he said nobody should be surprised with what Pittman did.
?I think I?ve been telling you all along the spark that Antonio provides for the offense,? Smith said. ?It?s all kind of unsung heroes within any football team. Too often a time, you get a couple guys that get all the ink and the people that are really doing the grinding day in and day out at practice or games don?t get enough.?
n THE OTHER WELLS SCORES: Freshman Chris Wells had only five carries for 18 yards, and it was sophomore Maurice Wells who reached the end zone in the fourth quarter.

The trio of running backs helped the Buckeyes to 166 rushing yards. The Buckeyes have not reached their team goal of 200 per game yet, but the total was impressive considering they ran for only two yards in the first quarter.
Maurice Wells powered through two tacklers at the goal line to finish a 9-yard TD run. It was the first rushing touchdown of his career.

You know, it really seemed to me that Troy was a bit off today. Just not getting a good read on the D, holding the ball a bit too long, a little off on his throws, more horizontal passing & less vertical passing than usual. Then I got home and saw the stats:

70% completion, 9.7 Yds per completion, 6.7 yds per attempt, 200+ yds passing, 2 tds.

Most QB's would be putting up these numbers in a good day, and this is what Troy does on an off-day. Remarkable.

A lot of us forgot just how good Dantonio is. His schemes really threw Troy for a loop until the 2nd quarter. The entire team seemed to have a Texas-sized hangover too, but they got it rolling after Cinci drove down the field. The Bucks responded like a #1 team should when they were smacked in the mouth.

Is it me, or has anyone else also caught how bad the footing has been at the shoe over the first 2 games? Divots have been coming up left and right......it's pretty bad. Man, they need to fix that, we are a team built on speed. Bad footing will neutralize that edge against a good team.

I noticed that right off, mentioned it to BKB, he agreed....

Looks like grubs, LOL... Better call Chemlawn or something.

I think the problem is from when they put the tarp on the field before the NIU game. It kept all the moisture right up on top of the turf. When they took the tarp off, the field it was a mess. Looking at it on TV today made me cringe. It looks like a BuckeyePlanet golf outing was held on it! It's probably going to be screwed up the whole season now.

That turf is designed to drain A LOT of water down and through itself and still maintain firmness. Keeping the tarp on it so long just ruined everything.

Im surprised OSU got it going so good in the 2nd half. Dantonio is a type of coach that scares me with his OSU history
