Game Thread Game Ten: Ohio State 48, Northwestern 7 (final)

With Saturday being Senior Day...i had a thought. I think that a guy like Santonio Holmes should be recognized on Senior day. He IS a Senior...he just has one more year of elegability...since he was a Red Shirt Freshman. Now I really don't know much about his education status...but I think that IF a player a) has been enrolled for 4 years and b) is scheduled to graduate that spring, that he should be reoginzed somehow for that achivement.

He only isn't a senior because he Redshirted his freshman year...that doesn't mean that during that year he didn't practice with the team every day, and it doesn't mean he didn't go to class. Now, the only tough part in this I see is how do we know which guys to recognize and which not to, since some leave early, and some don't. I don't really know a way around that, other than the player making a decision early, but that would be stupid since you don't want a player to be making decisions like that until the season is over.

My point is...Santonio Holmes is as much of a senior as I ever was. He's in the same class as Hawk, Mangold, Sims, Kudla, Carpenter, Hawk, Everett, and Salley. They will all be honored this Saturday, and their only difference is they saw limited playing time their first year, while Holmes didn't. Sure there are a lot of JRs right now that have been with the team 4 years...Zwick and Smith along with many others...but all of them will be back next year. So it doesn't take anything away from them to wait until next year to call them Seniors. But I would say Santonio Holmes is as much as senior as anybody on the offense. He has been the leader on the field and on the sidelines all year. He should be recognized...somehow.

So since it would be really hard to honor him Saturday since he hasn't made a decision yet, nor should he...the one way I thought of to regonize players like this is that if a player who leaves early, but did spend 4 years with the team, graduates that spring, they are allowed to come back the following year on Senior day and be recoginzed. So for example, Santonio Holmes would come back next year for the Michigan game and be announced with the other Seniors like Troy Smith and Youboty and so on...I can't see anything wrong with that.

Think about how stupid it would be for him to be honored only to come back again next year...does anyone deserve two Senior Days? No. Hey, D'Andrea is a senior also and he's not being recognized. Senior Day is for those who are playing their last game of eligibility ever at home.

Nice input. Next time why don't you try reading my whole post! I talked about how that's a problem, and therefore I said he could be regonized NEXT YEAR! But seriously though, great post.

Jason White probably had 2. Wouldn't want to see that happen here.

Like this idea. Players like Santonio have given their all for 4 years and deserve to be recognized.

However, what do we do with players who leave after 3 years and are model student-athletes; classroom, community, and football field? They just happen to be ready for the next level. Would we invite Orlando Pace back for senior day? Sounds good. But would we invite back Boston or Katz? How would you make that judgement?

Nope...they HAVE to graduate and HAVE to have spent 4 years with the team. I don't see Holmes as leaving early. I just would see it as leaving on-time, and not taking advantage of an NCAA rule. Those other players left early.

IMO, Smith will again - for a 5th straight game - throw for over 200 yards. I just dont see the 116th pass rush team in the nation causing too much havoc on the 2nd best center and the tall trees we have blocking. OSU has seen better than the NW front four. This game will help Smith keep up his pass eff. stats for another week and bust out some more trickery before Michigan week (ie. Ginn at QB).

On the other side, we lead the Big Ten in sacks as a team (36) and have the best 2 sackers in Kudla and Hawk. This could be a loooooong day for the pruple warriors from Chi-Town.

And if we are talking about stats that should be on the up-keep this Saturday, lets talking special teams. After a mediocre - to sloppy play these past two weeks (degraded by muffed catches, missed assignments), we should hopefully be back to normal before Michigan week. Among 117 ranked Division I-A teams, Ohio State is the only one in the top 40 in the five special-team categories the NCAA ranks: net punting, punt returns, kickoff returns, punt coverage and kickoff coverage. The NCAA does not rank field goal percentage, but Huston is tops in the Big Ten at 84.6 percent, and his 40 touchbacks on 57 kickoffs likely would rank close to the top, too.

Now, Forget the rankings for a moment, and just consider the key special-teams moments already this season: Two Ginn touchdown returns, stuffing an Illinois fake punt, preventing Big Ten-leading kickoff returner Jakari Wallace of Minnesota from returning even once, and of course, the two blocked field goals against Michigan State.

Never thought I'd see those words again...

Northwestern (6-3) at Ohio State (7-2) 12 pm ET ABC
Why to watch: Ohio State is still in the mix for the outright Big Ten title needing to win its final two games and hoping for a Michigan State win over Penn State next week. But first, the Buckeyes have to deal with an exciting Northwestern team coming off a thrilling 28-27 win over Iowa to become bowl eligible. The Wildcats can still win a share of the Big Ten title by getting a Nittany Lion loss, and beating Ohio State this week and Illinois next week. The Buckeyes throttled Illinois 40-2 and has scored more than 40 points in three straight games. Since the loss to Penn State, the supposedly dull Buckeye attack has averaged 40.25 points per game, while Northwestern is seventh in the nation in total offense averaging 508 yards per game.

Why Northwestern might win
: For all the good things Ohio State has done, the secondary gets torched against good quarterbacks. Michigan State's Drew Stanton threw for 340 yards and a touchdown, Minnesota's Bryan Cupito threw for 396 yards and a touchdown, and Vince Young threw for 270 yards and two scores. Northwestern QB Brett Basanez leads the Big Ten's top passing attack throwing for 319 yards per game, and he should be able to bomb away on the Buckeye secondary. However ...

Why Ohio State might win
: ... if Northwestern isn't throwing well, this isn't going to be a pretty game. Tyrell Sutton and the Northwestern running game won't be able to do much against the nation's No. 3 run D. The Wildcat run defense might as well not even be on the field giving up a 100-yard rusher in seven of nine games with Penn State's Tony Hunt rushing for 99 and Purdue spending all its time passing with Brandon Kirsch throwing for 360 yards. Antonio Pittman has rushed for 415 yards and four scores over the last three weeks. Be shocked if the Buckeyes don't rush for more than 250 yards.

Who to watch
: Who's the Big Ten's hottest passer? Basanez? Michigan State's Drew Stanton? Penn State's Michael Robinson? Nope. It's Ohio State QB Troy Smith, who's leading the league in passing efficiency completing 65% of his throws over the last four games with ten touchdown passes and an interception. Since taking over the reins in the Texas game, Smith has 13 touchdown passes and three interceptions while rushing for 433 yards and eight scores. He'll give Northwestern fits.

What will happen
: Northwestern will push Ohio State hard for about a half, but the Buckeye defense dominate against the run and get consistent pressure on Basanez. The Wildcat defense has no chance against the red-hot OSU attack.

CFN Prediction
: Ohio State 40 ... Northwestern 23 ...
Line: Ohio State -15.5 | Make your pick and compete against others
Must See Rating: (5 lock yourself in a room to watch - 1 The Apprentice: Martha Stewart) ... 3.5
