Game Thread Game One: Ohio State 34, Miami of Ohio 14 (final)

OK, I'll start.

Miami is a one dimensional passing team who lost their best WR(Larkin). They managed guady scoring numbers against the MAC, something like 31 ppg, but managed 10 and 13 points vs the 2 BCS schools they lost to (scUM and ?? )

The positives for them are they are a SR laden bunch in 2005 and might catch us looking ahead to UT but thats pretty much their only hope.

Thoughts?

Their other BCS opponent was a 17-13 loss to Iowa St. in the Independence Bowl. They also have to deal with a new head coach, Shane Montgomery, since Hoeppner went to Indiana.

Miami University Spring Game April 9
 What needs working on ... Holding on to the ball. 30 turnovers were hard to get over killing momentum on too many drives. It was an equal opportunity problem with 14 fumbles and 16 interceptions. More ground production would be better only averaging 120 yards per game with too much of a reliance on the passing game
The most important position to watch is ... Running back. QB Josh Betts and receiver Martin Nance and R.J. Corbin will be the offense, but that doesn't mean the loss of longtime producers Luke Clemens and Mike Smith out of the backfield isn't going to hurt. Finding reliable kickers to replace PK Jared Parseghian and P Mike Wafzig is also important.
Spring attitude... It's time to dominate. Miami has done the get-to-a-bowl thing, and that's not something to take lightly, but the team and program have to take the next step and become more of a respected national power. This is a senior dominated team that new head coach Shane Montgomery takes over; it should be a terror all year long if the coaching staff does the job.

We've lost a couple of Kickoff Classic openers (Miami in NJ in 1999, Bama in NJ in 1986), but the last loss in a home opener was the 19-0 game against Penn St. in 1978, which was Woody's last year.

I agree that it should be a blow-out. But it seems to me that Tressel rarely blows teams out. Cooper used to blow teams out. He'd blow out the suck teams and lose to the tough teams. Tressel is the opposite - he barely beats the suck teams and then beats the tough teams.

Anyway, I haven't been up-to-date on everything. The last I heard (it was probably just a rumor at the time) was that Smith's punishment was supposed to be a 2-game suspension. But the NCAA "sometimes" counts a bowl game as 2 games against a suspension. Any truth to this, or maybe I'm just remembering stuff that didn't actually happen. (I tend to do that.) It would be nice if Smith can get a game under his belt before the jerks from Texas come in.

This really isn't a fair statement. Cooper had unbelievable offenses, with tons of top RBs and WRs at his disposal. JT's 01 offense was poor, the 02 one was meager when clarett got hurt, the 03 one was the same story, and the 04 one was only exciting once Smith/Ginn/Gonzalez emerged.

Keep in mind that when clarett was healthy we were smothering teams. 45-21 over a good TxTech team. 51-17 Kent State. 25-7 #7 WSU. 23-19 Cinci. 45-17 IU. 27-16 NW. 50-7 SJSU.

Tressel still will not have quite the same offensive proficiency that Cooper had. He may have more gamebreaking ability at WR this year, but he does not have a single jump ball WR, nor can we be sure we have a solid RB (I hope Haw is).

At the end of the day, keep in mind that Michigan State and Texas Tech can blow people out offensively. Look how well it's served them most years.

I am hoping to see us get to the QB....Nance is a nice receiver and can do some damage....I would assume that Miami will look to challenge the young corner to the boundry side with his athleticism.

Will OSU run the ball effectively...we shall see...that will have a lot to do with how many points we put up.

I know we can hurt them with the passing game but my gut tells me we come out and try and establish the run.

Buckeye from scUM - You're right. Cooper was blessed with some awesome talent, and Tressel was given some not-so-great players offensively. And since the offensive side of the ball is where the points tend to come from for a blow-out (DUH!) Tressel hasn't had many opportunities. I retract my statement that "Tressel" doesn't blow out teams. I'm sure he would have done as well as (if not better than) Cooper did with those teams.

But staying on topic (Miami (OH) strategies), we all seem to be talking as if tOSU will have a chance to put in 3rd stringers. I just hope tOSU comes out and wins the game. You don't win the NC by using this week's game to prepare for next week's game.

I dont see JT letting this team look past Miami and lose because we are thinking about UT. I think the seniors on defense will lead this team to a nice victory. Hopefully, we kick this season off w/an explosive offense.

BFS, I wouldnt call the UCin game a smothering. IIRC Gino had a chance to beat us at the end but 2 drop passes in the endzone lost it. I could be wrong, but i thought thats what happened in 2002
