Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

Is it just me or does Teddy Ginn look like Gumby in pads??? D-Wheels might as well be a giant nutcracker....I'm sure Tressell has to put the film in slow motion when evaluating him so it's not just a blur. Speaking of Teddy Ginnandjuice...someone might want to call 911 b/c i think he can now officially be classified as a missing person. Who has more tackles A.J. Hawk or The Poz? The Poz. Who has more tackles for a loss? You guessed it...The Poz. Troy Smith...what was he suspended for again? Man, yall sure do run a clean program. Jim Tressell might try to dress and act clean cut like JoePa...but he'll never be as great as Big Papa. I guess everyone needs to have a role model. Who's is A.J. Hawks....you guessed it again.............The Poz.

Yeah, I guess that's good for The Poz. Once upon a time, a kid at Indiana named John Kerr led the Big Ten in tackles. Now, he rides the bench in Columbus. The Poz would fit in well on the scout team here. Just goes to show you that you can rack up all kinds of huge numbers if you're an OK player surrounded by total chumps. Somebody's gotta make the tackles, and apparently nobody else in Happy Valley does that.

Everyone in the country has heard of Santonio Holmes, Troy Smith, Ted Ginn...yet most people couldn't name one player on the PSU offense. There is a reason for that. Let's hype up an offense that's played good in ONE GAME. And even then, your QB sucked. He can't pass...NOT AT ALL. He CAN NOT PASS!!! That's a problem against a defense that leads THE WORLD in rush defense...don't you think? How the hell are your pussy recievers going to beat us if there is nobody to get the ball to them? Your QB sucks. Our QB doesn't. That's the difference between these teams. I'll give your defense credit, it's good...but your offense sucks, and one game doesn't change that.

The key to Ohio State's secondary. Wherever the Penn State recivers are...don't be there. Let them be wide open. Michael Robinson threw about 70% of his passes nowhere near the reciever last week...so obviously the place for the defense to be is where the reciever isn't. Can you say zone blitz?

Penn State smells

now now XC; if you would just venture on over to their boards you would find out that they can run on us, robbinson should be considered for the heisman, and that their LBs are indeed much better than ours.

Look...the only reason this teams scares me at all is because of their defense. Defense keeps you in games. But we have a defense too...and the only way theirs can play better is because of the crowd...which I think will only even things out defensively, AT BEST. But their offense sucks. They can't deny that. It's horrible. It's no better than ours was at the begining of last year. You can't rely on freshman to win you big games. None of these guys have ever played in a game like this, as big as this...all of our guys have. This will be nothing new to Ohio State and they won't be phased. I'd say the only guy on the field tomorrow that has a shot at being in New York at the end of the yaer is Mr. Hawk.

And now for a legitimate comparison of Hawk vs. POS-LOSE-something

Yes, Hawk has more/better athletes around him to share tackles with; but that is NOT the reason he has fewer tackles than wutzizname.

I don't have the patience to go through and count the total number of snaps each player has been on the field for, but I did look up the total number of plays that each team's opponents have had. Guess what? PSU opponents have had 161 more plays! That might have something to do with the fact that they have made more 1st downs and stay on the field longer against the Lions than what OSU's opponents have managed against the Buckeye D.

Here's the breakdown:

Total Plays:
  • OSU opponents: 239 :: 59.75/game
  • PSU opponents: 390 :: 78/game
1st Downs:
  • OSU opponents: 55 (13 run, 36 pass, 6 penalty) 13.75/game
  • PSU opponents: 90 (27 run, 55 pass, 8 penalty) 18/game
Plays/Tackle:
(for the mathematically challenged, the lower number is better)

  • A.J. Hawk: 5.975 (239 plays/40 tackles)
  • Puss-Oozey(sp?): 6.842 (390 plays/57 tackles)

daddybigbucks, i seriously appreciate those stats. find a great stat to argue your case, and there's little better. while some stats mislead, this one does not. such an approach is likely the explanation for kerr previously leading the big ten in total tackles. if your defense is going to see more plays, your players are going to have more tackles. it's a matter of necessity; otherwise, your opponents score touchdowns, run out of bounds, pass incomplete, kick a field goal, or fall down.

edit: such a stat could be explained away if hawk remained in the game longer, on average, than poz has. given the relative scores, i don't think that this is the case.

My morning started off badly...

Im reading the paper, and I live in Ohio mind you. The local morning journal bastard picked Penn State to beat us 27-7. He also said that Penn State has a better secondary, and d-line. He called the quarterback match-up even also.

What the Hell???

to think that he thinks that psu's offense is better than texas', he must be a closet or outright nittany lion. you know, if you are a buckeye writer and you feel that an opponent is better, you are not true to yourself and your readers if you lie and predict that your team will win. your favorite team never wins indefinitely. that being said, i'd seriously question the writer's allegiance. 27-7? c'mon. this smacks of partiality. the spread is 3... in favor of the bucks. heck, even a buckeye writer who is true to himself and his fans would most likely not post such a spread in favor of the bucks.

"The Buckeyes do not deploy 200-220 lb linebackers but 6'1" 240-245 lb'ers. If you have any clue about the human anatomy you would know that these players are stiffer and more stout not quicker."

This person Mili quoted can not be over the age of ten...:shake:

We've seen the stats throughout this thread. They've been analyzed completely by others. I will instead comment on the intangibles as I see them. Penn State is relying on freshman for the most part to win their biggest game in perhaps a decade. I would not like to be in that situation. Look for dropped passes/kicks, over anxiousness/trying to do too much, and a general tightening of the sphincter. Confidence...comes with experience. We have players who own national championship rings and have played on the biggest of stages and have won. That is experience. Can Penn State overcome that turn in momentum that will inevitably happen or will their youth show through? I don't know, and I don't think they know yet either. Where do they draw experience from? The high school team they were on last year? Does Robinson lose confidence in his freshman if they put the ball on the ground a few times? If this happens, does Robinson have the ability to put this team on his back? I don't believe he does. Tough spot to be in, IMO. Now I know we have struggled in the past at HV. I do not think we will this year. I think we are good enough to overcome a few mistakes and still win. I think PSU must play a nearly perfect game to win. I don't think PSU will play anything resembling a perfect game. JMO.

I also take solace in knowing that if there is one thing that can almost always be counted on in football, it's defense. And we've got a great one. The crowd will not affect that. We are dictating the tempo with the pressure and that pressure is what causes the mistakes. I have not seen anything from Penn State to believe this week will be much different. There is no way they run the ball whatever it was, 60 times? against us. If they try that gameplan, expect a career day for their punter. I have yet to see anyone confuse our defense. Yes, Texas had them a little tired, but if not for some great individual plays and an incredible catch (right in front of my seat, damnit!), we win that game. I do not see this defense out of position or making mental mistakes thus far. A few penalties, OK I grant that, but they are generally from being aggressive and Jenkins' double penalty (holding/interefernce), from my vantage point, saved a TD IMO. He looked beat to me and made the smart play. I can live with a few of those. We are as solid as we've ever been on this side of the ball and that's the difference come saturday IMO.
