Game Thread Game Eleven: Ohio state 25, Michigan 21 (final)

I know it's definitely been said many times... but that catch by Anthony Gonzalez was spectacular. Also, Troy Smith's poise was absolutely incredible, as well. However, it's very disappointing that Bobby Carpenter fractured his foot. Hopefully, he will be back for our bowl game.

GO BUCKEYES!!!

:oh: :io:

I just got here so I'm sure it's all been said before but it was a great team effort despite the best attempts by the officials. A win against scUm makes for a satisfying winter, Praise God we won. Time to pull up Go Blow and revel in the carnage.:osu:

Edit; The game willbe replayed on ESPN Classic Wedsday night at 9:00 PM

Building on NFBuck's above post, we had two turnovers in our territory to Michigan's no turnovers at all, stupid penalties (Schlegel's PI on 3rd and long away from the incompletion, giving Michigan a free first down), a poor punt, a disasterous punt return game, etc., and yet we had eight more first downs and 163 more yards of offense...and most importantly, more points.

also, we beat a team that was playing extremely well. it's one thing to beat michigan when they don't come with pistons firing, but it's quite another to beat them when the excuses aren't there.

Instant Analysis
Ohio State 25 ... Michigan 21

ByMatthew Zemek The game was a microcosm of Ohio State’s whole season. At times, Troy Smith was brilliant, at times he was tentative and turnover-prone. On some occasions, the Buckeyes were awesome; on other occasions, Ohio State was vulnerable to emotional letdowns and long stretches of stagnant, uninspired play. The Bucks had dominated Michigan in the early going, but midway through the fourth quarter on Saturday in Ann Arbor, the scoreboard read Michigan 21, Ohio State 12. For all of their excellence, for all of their talent, for all of their enormous capabilities, the Buckeyes were about to lose to one of the poorer Michigan teams in recent memory.

There was only one man who could prevent the Buckeyes and their BCS at-large bowl hopes from going down the drain… along with bragging rights in one of college football’s signature rivalries. That man was Troy Smith, the same man who evaded Michigan’s defense with regularity last season in Columbus and made the Maize and Blue look simultaneously foolish and slow. Eight minutes from a devastating defeat, it was Smith and only Smith who would be able to turn things around for Ohio State.

Turnaround completed, mission accomplished.

Several darts and several spins later, Troy Smith had engineered two dominating scoring drives. From a cash-money third and 10 scramble that set up one touchdown, to another bit of ballet on a spectacular completion to Anthony Gonzalez which set up the winning score, Smith was every bit the swashbuckler who singlehandedly destroyed Jim Herrmann’s defense the year before. By rediscovering his good side after a nightmarish third quarter in which he and his teammates were shellshocked, Troy Smith--besides putting his imprint on this game in an unmistakable way--enabled this up-and-down 2005 season to be remembered in Columbus more for its glories than its setbacks. After a whole Autumn in which the good and the bad coexisted to an incredibly frustrating degree, Ohio State and Smith--in their biggest game against their hallowed rival--managed to display a little more beauty and a little less beast at crunch time. It was close, and the scales balancing Ohio State’s positive and negative dimensions were constantly in flux in this game--just like the entirety of the whole season--but at the end of the day, the delightful Mr. Jekyll of Troy Smith’s artistry eclipsed the hideous Mr. Hyde found in key turnovers, drops, and defensive penalties that set up Michigan touchdowns and made the Wolverines much more competitive than they ever had a right to be.

It was a roller coaster ride for Ohio State--in this game and throughout 2005--and the Buckeyes will still have to sweat out a BCS selection show in which Notre Dame and Virginia Tech might get BCS at-large invites ahead of them. But Michigan has been slain, Jim Tressel is 4-1 against Lloyd Carr since coming to Columbus in 2001, and Troy Smith is now OSU’s unquestioned leader under center heading into 2006. Life could be much, much worse in Columbus; the winter will be easy to take in central Ohio, all because of one man: Troy Smith.

Overcome I am - Tressel is one Smart Cat

By emotion,

By respect:

For so many years we would sit by and watch Cooper piss away the last few minutes or seconds of a game.

Today, we saw a Master school his inferior. Lllloyd, with less than 45 seconds on the clock, was first faced with a situation when it became important to pay attention to available time-outs. In response to which constraint Tressel waited until the last moment and forced Carr's hand, making him burn a Time-Out. Suddenly the entire shape of the game shifted. No longer was there an outside chance of scUM winning. It now was simply a question of the magnitude of Ohio State's victory.

For this and any similar instances of Tressel provng himself to be significantly smarter than his opposing coaches, I award the game ball, and Ther Most Valuable Coach since Woody award to Head Coach Jim Tressel of The Ohio State University!
