Men's basketball: Ex-Buckeyes off to Europe

dispatch

Ron Lewis and Ivan Harris, starters on the Ohio State men's basketball team that reached the NCAA championship game last season, will spend their first year as professionals overseas.

Lewis, a Brookhaven graduate, left this week for Belgium, where he signed to play for Leuven in the country's Division I league. Harris, of Springfield, will play for Lappeenrannan NMKY in Finland's top league.

Here is a short thread about Lewis on DraftExpress.

ron lewis had a good year in Belgium - DraftExpress Forums

Looks like Ron is using his ill first step rather well in Europe. I hope he gets another shot with an NBA Summer League squad this month. (Hunter and possibly Butler will be participating as well). He's at least Euroleague caliber in my biased buckeye opinion. If the NBA doesn't come calling..no sweat..he'll just prove himself for a couple more years in the smaller divisions and go on to make real good coin. Good luck Lewis :P

Ron Lewis & Je'Kel Foster updates

d65.jpg

Well, It did not take long for Ron Lewis and Je'Kel Foster to move up the ranks of International Basketball. Lewis has just signed a deal with the Czech League champions CZE Nymburk. His previous team was Ironi Nahariya of Isreal's BSL. Nahariya had financial problems all season long. Players were not being paid on time. Some refused to play, and they had little depth throughout the season. Yet, Ron perservered and emerged as one of the league's top scorers.

NYMBURK completes roster with Lewis - Eurocup 2009-10 - Welcome to Eurocup

Friday, July 31, 2009

CEZ Basketball Nymburk rounded out its roster for the coming season by inking guard Ron Lewis to a one-year deal, the club announced Friday. Lewis (193, 25) arrives from Iscar Nahariya, where he averaged 18.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 25 Israeli League games last season. He was the fourth-best scorer in the Israeli League last season. Lewis has also played for Spotter Leuven in Belgium after a college career at Ohio State University, where he helped the Buckeyes to win the Big 10 Tournament and make it to the NCAA Tournament final in 2007, his senior season, in which he averaged 12.7 points and 3.6 rebounds.

"I am very pleased that we signed Rom Lewis to complete our roster. Lewis is a great shooter, especially from long distance," Nymburk head coach Muli Katzurin said. "He is the kind of player ready to take responsibilities in crunch time."
Buckeye Ballers Blogspot: Ron Lewis signs with Czech Republic Champions CZE Nymburk

...Like Je'Kel Foster, Ron Lewis will now have an opportunity to play against a higher level of competition. It can be argued that Isreal's BSL is just as good/competitive as the Czech Republic's domestic league. However, as the reigning Czech Champs, CZE Nymburk automatically qualifies for the Eurocup, the 2nd highest division of European basketball. If you are familiar with the Champions League setup in soccer, this is the same deal. The top domestic club champions are put together in a group to determine the 'champion' of champions. Eurocup is the 2nd class, with the EuroLeague being the highest, Je'Kel Foster will play in the EuroLeague next season.

Foster Resigns with EWE OldenBurg

EWE BASKETS OLDENBURG - HOME (German, it basically talks about how EWE resigned the core of their championship team.)

You can expect a lot more coverage of these guys next season with both playing in the prestigious Euroleague and Eurocup. At 25, both are knocking on the doors of the primes of their careers, and I think it is great that they will have a chance to prove themselves vs the top teams and players of Europe. I know they will perform well. :osu:

Ron Lewis dropped 17 points in his debut with the Czech Champions Nymburk on Oct. 3rd in a 94-57 rout of a team called BK B&W Opava. Their 2nd game is today.

European Basketball Main Page - EUROBASKET

Lewis joins an already strong team in Cez Nymburk, these guys have won four out of the last five Czech league titles. All the season previews expect Nymburk to march through the Mattoni NBL (Czech League) with relative ease again. However, this off season they specifically acquired Lewis and two other players in hopes of having a better showing at this seasons Eurocup (Europe's 2nd highest level of inter-continent club competition). This is where Lewis should make some real noise.

(Lewis vs NH Ostrava 10/10/2009)

After Ron's senior year, I really thought he'd get a shot at the NBA. Glad he's doing well in Europe, but...bummer.

Yep, it is always something with the pros. Either you are not tall enough, fast enough, or just not the right fit at the time. Personally, I believe Lewis has the offensive game to play in the NBA (it's not like he would be the only 6'4 SG). I watched some of his games in the Isreali league last season, and he looked even more explosive when driving to the hoop than his days in Columbus. The Eurocup competition will be the biggest stage of Ron's pro career so far. After this season I expect him to get a look by a top european club, and maybe even an NBA training camp.

It is all about getting a good opportunity & sticking though. Take former Ohio Star Jessica Davenport for example..she was a top 5 WNBA draft pick to New York, it did not work out and she ended being waived. She then signed here in Indy, was a bench afterthought for most of the season. But then she came in and scored 10 points in game 2 of the finals, and followed that up with a career high 18 points in game 5. She is now established and is a very popular player here. :)

Yet, the men's game is a different animal because there is a ridiculous amount of talented players with few (NBA) spots. There is a guy named Ricky Paulding on Je'Kel Foster's German team. tOSU fans may remember him, he played on the Missouri team that thrashed us in the NCAA tournament. I know this guy should be playing in the NBA right now, but for whatever reason he isn't. (he is the highest payed player in the country though) The current economic climate is making things worse. Some NBA teams have decided to downsize the normal roster count of 15 to 13/12. This is why Othello Hunter is currently in a big time battle for a roster spot in Atlanta. These cuts are positively affecting the lower leagues around the world as rosters are now getting stronger with guys would otherwise be in the states. But anyways lets get back to Lewis.

Cez Nymburk has played four regular season games so far. They are smashing foes, and Lewis is killing it. He's already averaging 20 points in just a little over 19 minutes per game.

Brookhaven's Ron Lewis & his team CEZ Nymburk are rolling through the Czech League. They are currently sitting at the top of the league standings at an undefeated 14-0. They have only had two really competitive games so far this season. They played their last game on the 18th vs NH Ostrava, it was a 129-61 beating :yow1: ...Lewis had 17 points.

Cez Nymburk is preparing for the EuroCup competition next week where they will travel out of their league and play clubs from Italy, Turkey & Lativa. Ron is very excited about Eurocup, this will be the biggest stage that he has played in as a pro so far.

-Some highlights of Ron in his 2nd year (08/09 season) as a pro in Isreal. His team was Ironi Nahriya.

-The play at approximately 1:00 is a game winner. Sick dunk at 1:44, I remember some nice dunks by Lewis at Ohio State, but not any throwdowns like that!
