G Ronald Lewis (FOS Provence Basket - France)

draft express

Stock Up
Lewis improved his stock once again with another big time performance, helping Ohio State advance to the Final Four. The fifth year senior posted his third straight 20-point game in the tournament, leading the Buckeye’s scoring attack.

Most of Lewis’ damage was done at the free throw line, where he was perfect, scoring 10 of his 22 points. He was very aggressive driving to the basket and was able to pick up quite a number of shooting fouls. Lewis isn’t the greatest slasher in the world due to his mediocre ball-handling skills, but he is quick and strong, and when he gets any kind of opening he’ll take off and make things very hard on defenders trying to stop him from getting into the lane. Once in the paint he was looking to finish strong around the rim, but did pull up once for a soft floater that didn’t connect. His deceptive moves and good use of screens always makes Lewis a threat to go to the hole if the opportunity presents itself.

Lewis? long march toward recognition

Ohio State senior making others take notice with heroics

Ron Lewis is the unsung hero on an Ohio State team full of stars.

By Adam Kilgore

Updated: 1:11 a.m. ET March 27, 2007

SAN ANTONIO - It still embarrasses him, he admitted, but Thad Matta had no earthly idea who Ron Lewis was after Lewis's senior season in high school. And Matta coached Xavier then, a mid-major program that could ill afford to overlook any player, no matter how obscure.
But Lewis has a history of being overlooked, one that continues through Ohio State's run to the Final Four despite his heroics. Overshadowed by Greg Oden and OSU's four other high-profile freshmen ? a group dubbed the "Thad Five" after their head coach ? Lewis has been the Buckeyes' leading scorer in the NCAA tournament, providing senior leadership, a knack for clutch plays and the most memorable shot of the tournament.

I think he deserved the south region MVP award over anyone, including Mike. His heart and will helped bring Ohio State back against Xavier and he saved the team's season with his game-tying three pointer that sent that game into overtime. He played a big part in the comeback against Tennessee, going on a 9-0 run, himself. On top of those things, he's hit every free throw he has taken in the tournament and has scored 20 + points in his last three games.

What else does a guy need to do to get the award. It's baffling.

If things go as planned, we may have a few more awards to win. Ron has been absolutely outstanding in this tournament, and without him we are home watching. He just keeps showing up big, when they talk about everybody but him. I pick Conley as the team MVP for the season, and Lewis-Conley as co-MVP's for our tourney run so far. Take either one away, and we may be done. Conley gets us where we need to be, but WOW about Lewis.

Buckeyes' Lewis paid his dues en route to Atlanta

His older brother, Lamont Carter, said as much Saturday after Ohio State defeated Memphis to advance to the Final Four.
"My brother couldn't make a layup in 8th grade," Carter, 33, said. "It was perseverance."
Lewis, a fifth-year senior, spent most of three seasons as a respected but limited threat for the Buckeyes, first because he sat out a year as a transfer from Bowling Green and later because the Buckeyes had big men to carry the load.
"He's always taken a back seat to win," Carter said.

Ron Lewis, senior forward

On how Georgetown played against Ohio State last season

"They attacked us with the zone and man defenses. They do have a big team, but sometimes that means we can attack them offensively when we have a big guy matched up against a smaller one and then we can drive to the basket."

On Georgetown's Jeff Green

"We have to limit his touches if we want to contain him. He is a great player so that makes it difficult."

Lewis' game now in spotlight
By John Henderson
Denver Post Staff Writer

San Antonio - Please, stop all the accolades for Ohio State coach Thad Matta. Yeah, sure, he turned around Ohio State basketball from probation to the Final Four in only three years. Yes, he signed Greg Oden and met all the universe's lofty expectations despite Oden playing half the year with virtually one hand. But Matta does have his faults.
He never recruited Ron Lewis.
"I'm embarrassed to say we didn't," he said during last week's South Regional at the Alamodome. "I don't know, but a couple of coaches lost their jobs over that."
Matta smiled when he said it. No coach anywhere lost his job for overlooking Lewis out of high school. No, when Lewis came out of high school, he was not the shooting machine and inspirational backbone who has shined this month inside Oden's huge shadow.

Lewis showing up on radar more and more
Jason Lloyd, Journal Register News Service
03/29/2007

It wasn't long ago that no one knew about Ron Lewis. He was the sixth man as a senior on his high school team at Brookhaven, which left him off the radar of Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien and his staff.
Similarly, Thad Matta knew nothing about him, even though Matta likely could have used him at Xavier.
"I'm really embarrassed to say we didn't recruit him. I don't know, but a couple of coaches lost their jobs over it," Matta joked.
No problem. Lewis is used to it by now.
Ignored by the Buckeyes out of high school, Lewis began his career at Bowling Green. Now the leader of the Buckeyes and the man in charge of every big shot, Lewis is constantly overshadowed by Ohio State's recruiting class. He can never seem to find the spotlight.

You can go home again After two tough years in Bowling Green, Ron Lewis took a big chance By Erik Johns / March 29, 2007
3-29_coverphoto.jpg
File/Dan Trittschuh On the rebound: five years after his state title with Brookhaven High, Lewis has starred in the NCAAs
On the fourth Saturday of March 2002, Ron Lewis sat precariously atop a basketball hoop at Value City Arena and held up a freshly cut net after his Brookhaven Bearcats won the Division I state high school championship, finishing their year with a 27-1 record. For the star guard on a dazzling team, the victory celebration looked like a sure sign of basketball success to come.
But if not for a risky decision to walk away from his scholarship at Bowling Green, it would have been Lewis’s last celebration on an Ohio State court and quite possibly his last happy memory as a basketball player.
With the 34-3 Ohio State basketball team two wins from a national championship, one player has stepped up to make every clutch shot his team needs.
It’s not freshman phenom Greg Oden or his running mate Mike Conley.

Ohio State's Ron Lewis takes control of himself, his team to emerge as an unexpected driving force

NEAL C. LAURONDISPATCH
A fifth-year senior who transferred from Bowling Green, Ron Lewis is the Buckeyes' leading post-season scorer.

The last time the Ohio State men's basketball team played in the Final Four, in 1999, Ron Lewis was a high-school freshman thinking about what high-school freshmen think about.
"I wasn't thinking about college," he said.
"He wasn't that good," added Drew Williams, Lewis' coach on the Brookhaven High School freshman team.

OSU BASKETBALL INSIDER
Lewis' season turnaround timely

Friday, March 30, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus - This Final Four, as talented as any in years, features future NBA stars like Ohio State's Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., Florida's Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer, Georgetown's Roy Hibbert and Jeff Green and UCLA's Aaron Afflalo. And the leading NCAA Tournament scorer at the Georgia Dome this weekend is the Buckeyes' Ron Lewis.
The Ohio State senior and his teammates arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday, Lewis lugging 87 total tournament points and a 21.8 points per game scoring average that tops anyone still playing. His postseason turnaround from his midseason struggles has left him as valuable as any player in the country.
In the middle of the year, Lewis admitted his game suffered more than any Buckeye when Oden joined the team, but that gradually he adjusted to driving to the basket when Oden was on the other side of the lane. While scoring 18.6 points in his last eight games, as opposed to 9.8 points his previous eight, Lewis said, "I just treated the tournament as a new season."
