Ohio State adding Kansas State transfer guard Ques Glover to bolster backcourt depth

After losing Taison Chatman to a season-ending knee injury, Ohio State is adding veteran guard Ques Glover for the 2024-25 season.

Glover, who played 99 games in four seasons split between Florida and Samford (with a brief stop at BYU), joins the Buckeyes after a year spent at Kansas State, where he missed the entire 2023-24 season with a knee injury. A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Glover averaged a career-high 19.2 points per game in his first year at Samford, where he was a first-team all-Southern Conference pick and a finalist for the Lou Henson Award, given out annually to the nation’s top mid-major player.

This will be Glover’s sixth year of college basketball. After playing four seasons, Glover was eligible for a medical redshirt last season, allowing him to now use the extra year of eligibility afforded to everyone who participated in the 2020-21 season to play for the Buckeyes.

A member of the 2019 recruiting class, Glover was a three-star prospect rated No. 366 nationally according to the 247Sports.com composite. He’s listed as a 6-0, 185-pound guard on Kansas State’s roster.

Glover is expected to give first-year coach Jake Diebler another experienced option in the backcourt. Third-year guard Bruce Thornton and fifth-year South Carolina transfer Meechie Johnson Jr. will assume the bulk of the minutes with freshman John “Juni” Mobley Jr. and Oakland and San Diego State transfer Micah Parrish expected to also play key roles.

Chatman’s injury, though, created a need for another roster addition. Although lightly used as a freshman, Chatman had seen more playing time with Diebler in place of Chris Holtmann and was poised for a more significant role as a sophomore before suffering a torn ACL early in summer workouts.

Ohio State has replenished its backcourt depth with a late transfer addition.

Former Kansas State, Samford and Florida guard Ques Glover committed to the Buckeyes out of the transfer portal and will spend his final year of collegiate basketball playing for Jake Diebler in Columbus.

Glover updated his Instagram account on Monday to reflect that he is now a Buckeye, and an Ohio State spokesperson confirmed that Glover had joined the team.

Glover will not be one of Ohio State’s 13 scholarship players this season. However, he will receive NIL compensation that covers his costs for attending the university.

Men’s Basketball: Ques Glover will provide depth to the Ohio State backcourt

With the season-ending injury to Taison Chatman, the Buckeyes turn to veteran Ques Glover to help fill that void.

When Taison Chatman went down with a season-ending injury in summer practice, it was clear the Buckeyes had to add another guard to help fill depth. Bruce Thornton and Meechie Johnson are the starters, with incoming freshman Juni Mobley being the only backup guard.

Enter Ques Glover.

Glover comes to Columbus as his fifth collegiate stop, but only the third school where he will actually suit up and play basketball. Glover started his career at Florida, where he averaged 4.4 points per game in 31 appearances his freshman season and 2.5 points per game in 20 contests his sophomore season.

After two seasons at Florida, Glover transferred to Samford, where he excelled as a scorer, averaging 19.2 points per game in his first season in 29 games played (28 starts). He also averaged 4.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds.

In his second season at Samford, he dealt with an injury. He averaged 14.7 points per game in 19 games, 18 of which he started. He bumped his three-point percentage up to 37.8 percent from 30.8 percent the previous season. He was named All-Southern in both of his seasons at Samford.

After his second season at Samford, he transferred to BYU, but never played there. He then transferred to Kansas State for his final season. Unfortunately, he dealt with multiple lower-body injuries that kept him out for the entire season.

He received a medical redshirt for his final season, and Ohio State became his final destination.

So far in his career, he has played 99 games and has averaged 10.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He has shot 46.1 percent from the field, 30.6 percent from three, and 78.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Now, Glover becomes an important piece for the Buckeyes, as they needed to add a guard after Chatman’s injury, which will see the sophomore guard miss the entire season. Roddy Gayle and Dale Bonner are gone from last season, and Johnson has reentered the program.

Johnson will join two-year point guard Bruce Thornton as the starters and mainstays in the backcourt. However, with those two starting and Chatman missing the season, that left only the freshman Mobley as depth.

Glover will come in and provide help in that area, but he has not played competitive basketball since 2022-23 and comes into Columbus with little in the way of expectations since he hasn’t been put in the game for over a year.

Adam Jardy talking to Juni Mobley about transfer addition Ques Glover

It’s fun,” he said of adding Glover to the mix. “He’s starting to learn all our concepts, how we work and stuff like that. We haven’t done a team workout yet, but when we come back, I feel like that will be fun to have him as part of the team. (He brings) a lot of energy. Buckets. I feel like he’s a good value to the team. I think that was a great pickup and I’m ready to play with him this season.
