Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • I don't know how many of you out there were like myself and bought the el-cheapo blue furnace filters from Lowe's.

Found out from a heating and cooling guy this weekend that you need to use the pleated/accordion style Filtrete filters that are about $7.00 a piece and last for about 3 months.

He said he uses those in his own home b/c they trap a lot more of the dust and are much better for the furnace. I already knew they trapped alot more allergens and dust mold but didn't know they were better for your furnace.

Just thought I'd let some fellow BP'ers in on this info. if they weren't aware of it already.

so wifey and i are house shopping, and for some reason i always have to look at the furnace filters in houses - i dont know why. the house we looked at a few days ago had a filter in that i swear said stambaugh's hardware on it. the last stambaugh's store that i can remember closed at least 8 years ago. i know the filter could have "new" and just laying around, but i just found it very funny.

The last Stambaughs that closed, I think, was the one in the Austintown Plaza.

Not a bad idea to look t the filters when shopping.

It could be worse. The inspection-record on the furnace in our new house starts in 1972. 35 is a good age for a furnace, right? :p

I can highly recommend getting a portable room air filter system!
You won't need to run it constantly(although it's just a fan with a filter).
Those with allergies will sleep better!

Home owners need to take care of their furnace!
That means maintenance and having an expert service it.
And don't be tempted to turn in off in the summer if it's a hotwater type.
I had a solar hotwater system connected to my furnace and thought,
"Why waste the fuel?" and turned the furnace off. Big mistake!
When winter heating time came and I turned it back on.........
it leaked! The rubber seals had dried out!
It cost a service call to repair the damage! $$$$ :(
