Henin and Sharapova are destined for a 3rd round match, and the two best players in the tournament will meet in the quarters if they're not upset, rather than in the semis or the finals.

The top-seeded American, though, awoke quickly and powered her way into the French Open quarterfinals, beating Peer 6-2, 6-2 in 67 minutes.

Williams' victory seemed destined to set up a match with Justine Henin, who had previously ousted sister Venus Williams.

But Henin's bid for a fifth title at Roland Garros was denied in three sets by Samantha Stosur 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Belgium lost for the first time here since 2004, a streak of 24
