Wildcats snap out of funk, win
Lawrence North breaks away from Franklin Central in 3rd quarter.
After a 16-day layoff, Lawrence North looked a bit sluggish. The unbeaten two-time defending Class 4A state champions led unranked Franklin Central by just three points in the third quarter.
"Then it was like the Road Runner," Franklin Central coach Mark James said. "Beep, beep -- gone."
On the heels of a strong third quarter from 7-foot center Greg Oden, visiting Lawrence North went on a 19-2 run and surged past the Flashes 57-38 Tuesday night. It was the fewest points the Wildcats have scored this season, but also the second-fewest they've allowed.
Oden, in foul trouble five minutes into the game, was 2-for-2 from the field in the first half for four points as the Wildcats seldom threw him the ball in position to make a play. That changed in the second half as Lawrence North looked for him more, and last season's national high school Player of the Year responded with 15 third-quarter points as the Wildcats (9-0) won their 25th game in a row.
Oden got the message assistant coach Joe Leonard delivered.
"He said I was walking around with my head down and he told me everybody was playing like that, with their head down," Oden said. "He said we needed somebody to play with some heart."
Oden finished with 21 points on 10-for-11 shooting, including hitting his improving hook shot, and had eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Lawrence North point guard Mike Conley had a nearly flawless game, scoring a game-high 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting, with four assists and five steals. Conley kept the Wildcats in the game in the first half with 14 points as they led 23-18.
Franklin Central (4-4) got 12 points from junior guard John Ashworth and eight points and four rebounds from 6-10 junior center JaJuan Johnson.
Lawrence North plays in the Marion County Tournament beginning Tuesday before playing at North Central on Jan. 19 in a game on ESPN2.

Flashes survive Hawks' rally
Franklin Central loses 12-point lead, but Decatur Central's comeback falls
short
Most of Friday night's Decatur Central vs. Franklin Central matchup was a ho-hum affair, with the Flashes going to JaJuan Johnson under the basket and sitting on a comfortable lead.
The final 90 seconds were anything but easy, however, as the Hawks (7-6) shaved a 12-point deficit down to one before Franklin Central (9-5) finished off a 61-59 win at home.
The Flashes struggled against Decatur Central's full-court press and turned the ball over three times in the last 1:30.
Hawks star Devon Dumes, who finished with 27 points, sank four free throws during that stretch, Darvel Reed made two and Alex Middleton sank one free throw and got the offensive rebound and putback on another to close the deficit to 60-57 with 39 seconds remaining. DeJon Gary stole a Flashes' inbound pass and scored to make it 60-59 with 2.6 seconds remaining.
"I don't know if we ran out of gas or they just decided to get after it harder there at the end," Franklin Central coach Mark James said. "We're a 70 percent free throw shooting team that must have shot 50 percent tonight."
Franklin Central was actually 60 percent from the line, but made just 10-of-19 in the second half.
Johnson, the Flashes' 6-10 post player, was outstanding everywhere but the free throw line. He had 23 points and made 9-of-12 from the field but was just 5-of-11 from the line.
"We always seem to have some really good battles with them," Decatur Central coach Dave Oberle said. "(The comeback) was a matter of us getting up and guarding people. (John) Ashworth and the big boy (Johnson) is really a load in there."
Ashworth had eight points and 10 assists. Matt Piety was Franklin Central's second-leading scorer with 13 points.
Franklin Central was slow out of the gate, falling behind 7-2.
But Ashworth started finding Johnson underneath the basket, which turned the tide.
Johnson had 10 first-half points and his first two field goals were dunks off Ashworth passes.

Franklin Central fattens up on turnovers
Franklin Central struggled to hold onto the basketball during the first three quarters of Wednesday's Class 4A sectional matchup with Greenwood at Southport High School.
The Flashes turned the ball over 14 times through three quarters, while Greenwood turned it over 10 times. Trailing by four points with 1:50 left, the Flashes turned the tables on the Woodmen.
Franklin Central's half-court trap defense forced Greenwood into five turnovers on its next six possessions and the Flashes capitalized with a 10-point run before holding off a Greenwood comeback to win 47-39.
"We turned it over the whole game till right at the end and they turned it over at the end," Franklin Central coach Mark James said. "It was a game of turnovers, I thought, and they just turned it over at the wrong time. Almost all (the runs) were off turnovers. That's what the tournament's all about."
Franklin Central (15-7) advanced to Friday's semifinal against Franklin (12-10), which knocked off defending sectional champ Decatur Central 76-68 in Wednesday's early game.
The Flashes shot just 8-for-20 from the field through the first three quarters, but turned it on in the fourth, hitting all seven of their field goal attempts and connecting on nine straight free throws in the final 1:30.
Franklin Central didn't miss from the line until one fell short with three seconds left from junior forward John Ashworth, who scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. However, 6-10 Flashes junior center JaJuan Johnson grabbed the rebound and slammed in a two-handed dunk to end the game.
The Flashes scored 23 points in the fourth quarter after managing just 24 through the first three.
"It was a really emotional and physical game," James said. "I thought both teams played really hard. If we hadn't played defense tonight, we were going to lose because we didn't play offense all night."
Senior forward Matt Allee led Greenwood (17-5), which had won nine straight coming in, with 12 points. Senior guard Robbie Newbold added 11.
Franklin's 5-9 guard Adrian Moss scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as Franklin was able to outlast Decatur Central.
The Grizzly Cubs trailed 21-13 after the first quarter but took the lead for good late in the second quarter. With the score tied 26-26, Franklin guard Adam Miller sank three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to make it 29-26. Miller, who led Franklin with 19 points, added six free throws in the fourth quarter.
Franklin senior forward Ben Gordon chipped in 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Cubs had 34 rebounds to the Hawks' 28.
"That was one of the keys going into the game: Not only did we have to defend their athletic ability but their ability on the boards too," Franklin coach Dave Clark said.
Senior DeJon Gary led Decatur Central (9-11) with 17 points and senior Devin Dumes added 15.
