Former Nebraska football coach Frank Solich will be announced as Ohio University's new coach at a 1 p.m. ET news conference Thursday, ESPN.com's Pat Forde reports.

The Bobcats started the season 3-2 before losing four straight games to MAC foes. Ohio finished 4-7, 2-4 in the MAC under coach Brian Knorr. Knorr compiled a record of 11-35 in four seasons, with records of 1-10 in his first and 2-10 in his third year on the job. The university announced it will honor the final year of Knorr's five-year contract.

Solich, one of the most successful college coaches of the past decade was fired by Nebraska after the 2003 regular season despite a 9-3 record and berth in the Alamo Bowl. He posted a 59-19 record (.753 winning percentage) in six season at the Big 12 school, but took over for the legendary Tom Osborne.

The Cornhuskers won at least a share of the national title in three of Osborne's final four seasons, and Solich was unable to match that level of success.

Solich was 42-9 in his first four seasons. He was Big 12 coach of the year in 1999 and 2001, won the '99 conference title and his team played for the national championship after the '01 season.

I know I am happy. Gives me a great reason to take a road trip to my old haunts next fall. But I have a feeling why he took this job over IU & Pitt. It is because he can do what he does best, and that is run an option team.

This is just thinking out loud, but I am taking a guess IU & Pitt would be curious if he is just an option coach. Of course he can take OU and not run an option to prove to other colleges he can run a different type of team. But the greedy part of me wants him to run the option again and make OU a MAC power.

As an OU grad I like the choice... I'm not too sure why he took the OU job over some of the others out there, but I'm not going to complain :wink2:

Coach D. prob. doesn't like this down in Cinnci... They (along with the other MAC schools) will have one more guy going after the same guys (now with a shot at getting them)...

Good luck to Solich... however the last good coach left town quickly to Wake a few years ago. If he does turn the program around, I doubt he'll be around for too long.

Man, look at all of us OU alums getting excited here! Great get for the 'cats. If you want my opinion, Solich went after the OU job because it's one of the only schools in the country with any recent history of option football. Yes, they abandoned it this year, but expect FS to bring it back.

Wow, that is unbelievable!

I thought Solich would end up in a major position in the next couple of years.

If solich is successful and sticks around, I get the feeling there's going to be a renaissance in OU football (or naissance, I don't know how successful they ever were really). OU is such an unknown in college football, wow. Does Solich have ties to anyone at OU?

That was my thinking as well. OU is a good fit for Solich, and the truth is; offensively OU won't be going for the same kind of recruit as UC. Defensively this won't make it easy on Coach D. That's ok, because they don't play 'D' in the MAC anyway. BTW I'm not an OU alum, but I was arrested there one Halloween.:tongue2:

Congrats Bobcats.

This reminds me of Lefty Driesell's taking the GA State basketball job a few years ago. Nobody could really understand why, but he wanted to do it, had already gotten his D1 chops, and turned the program around. I hope Solich will have similar results at OU.
