Ohio State is hoping to win on and off the field Saturday, as the 2024 regular season kicks off and a top Ohio State WR target is set to come off the board.

It finally happened. College football is back and will return to Columbus, Ohio this Saturday when Ohio State plays host to Akron. The upcoming season is one with the highest of expectations for Ryan Day and this year’s crop of Buckeyes. Additionally, the Big Ten added the likes of Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA.

With all that being said, much of the talk around town will focus on Saturday’s kickoff and how the current roster of Buckeyes will come to form.

However, do not expect that to also mean that recruiting will take a backseat for the Ohio State coaching staff. The Buckeyes have the nation’s top class in the current cycle and the team is not finished from adding to it. Ohio State is also putting in the early work in the 2026 recruiting class as well.

Because of this continued effort, Ohio State continued to make the college football headlines Monday.

Four-star WR has Ohio State in top 2, will commit Saturday

For those that follow Ohio State recruiting, and honestly for those that do not, it is common knowledge that the Buckeyes, led by Brian Hartline, are good at recruiting the wide receiver position.

Recruiting class after recruiting class, the Buckeyes bring in some of the best hauls at the position. Ohio State has three commitments in this current class with four-stars Quincy Porter and De’zie Jones to go alongside three-star and Ohio WR Bodpegn Miller.

Ohio State is looking to add to this haul and may do so sooner than later as 2025 four-star WR Phillip Bell (Mission Viejo, CA / Mission Viejo) announced his top two schools on Monday and also is set to announce his commitment this Saturday, Aug. 31.

Alongside Ohio State, Bell is also considering USC. The two schools have long been thought of as the leaders in his recruitment. USC especially seemed like the favorites early in his recruitment, but the Buckeyes have gained some serious steam down the stretch.

Bell took official visits to both Ohio State and USC — as well as Penn State, Washington and Georgia. Washington may still have some life left in it for Bell’s recruitment but it is mainly down to the Buckeyes or Trojans, with the Buckeyes having the slightest of edges over USC.

Bell is quite possibly the top-remaining prospect at wide receiver left on Ohio State’s big board, and Brian Hartline’s record on getting wideout’s he wants is unmatched. This one is certainly not a guarantee for the Buckeyes, but Ohio State has to like where it sits in this one.

Bell is the No. 19 WR and the No. 184 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite. He is also the No. 16 recruit from the talent-rich state of California.

Quick Hits

  • Ohio State’s 2025 recruiting class is almost wrapped up, and the Buckeyes have been placing more of a focus on next year’s cycle. The hard work seems to be paying off for Ryan Day and the Ohio State coaching staff as the team was the recipient of a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for 2026 four-star defensive lineman Aiden Harris (Matthews, NC / Weddington).

Harris just received a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes last week and already the team is the early favorites to land his services. Harris is the No. 2 DL and the No. 42 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is also the No. 4 recruit out of North Carolina.
