Former LB Coach Al Washington (Official Thread)

Turned down a multi-million dollar offer at Tennessee for an $85,000 raise at OSU. That's gotta make the orange faithful warm and fuzzy lolol

Notably, Washington's raise comes after he turned down an offer to become the defensive coordinator at Tennessee, which reportedly offered him more than a million dollars.

You have to feel kind of bad for him; especially after he turned down the Tennessee offer to stay at Ohio State just last year. Hindsight is 20/20, he should have taken the DC position with the > $1M salary at Tennessee.

I feel bad for the guy. He seems to be a loyal guy and a good recruiter. Maybe he was just a victim of the poor defensive scheme the last two years.

I'm sure he'll be in demand.
Eh he appears to be a good recruiter but a mediocre linebacker coach. Most coaches are good recruiters or good coaches. You don't survive very long being bad at both and you tend to not stay in postiion long if you're great at both unless you are content with your lot

Notre Dame homer spin on the situation. Although most Ohio State fans are disappointed his career tanked, I don’t think many if any think the LBs aren’t going to be better next year.

Beyond the LBs frequently making fundamental mistakes like filling the wrong gaps in run support and always looking completely lost in zone coverage, there was some really weird locker room stuff going on.

Never truly settling on starters the entire season was very strange, and players quitting in the middle of the season and literally in the middle of a game is way outside of normal. Say what you want about how the players handled the situation, but there was clearly something seriously wrong in that room and it’s hard to see how that wasn’t at least partially due to Washington’s actions.

It’s sad that it turned out this way, especially because he turned down big money to stay, but I have no doubt that Ohio State’s linebackers are going to be in a much, much better position next season.
